Dr. Charles T. Newton, of Clarks Summit, Pa., passed away on May 30, at the age of 88.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Connie M. Newton; five sons, C. David, Robert (Claudia), Timothy (Kathleen), James (Cheryl) and Mathew (Jill); 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by his sisters, Mary Ann Scanlan and Noel Kushke; and brothers-in-law, Thomas Ralicke and Robert Tokarz. He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert; and sister-in-law, Gloria Tokarz.
Born on July 21, 1934, he was the eldest son of Mr. Charles Noble and Mary Ryan Newton. Charles graduated from high school at Scranton Prep, and attended the University of Scranton, where he was a member of the Alpha Sigma Nu Honor Society. Upon graduating from college, he then attended Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, Pa., where he was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. Upon completing medical school, he served his medical internship at Scranton State General Hospital.
In 1961, Charles enlisted in the United States Air Force, and served his country as a physician at the Westover Airforce Hospital, Chicopee Falls, Mass. After finishing his service, Charles returned to Scranton, opening an office as a general practitioner. In 1968, Dr. Newton chose to specialize in neurology, accepting a neuro psychiatric residency at Georgetown University, later becoming the chief neurologic resident at the Washington Veterans Administration Hospital. In 1970, Charles and family relocated to Rochester, N.Y., where he joined the Rochester Neurological Group as a partner. While in Rochester he became board certified in neurology and psychiatry, and then a board examiner, certifying other physicians around the country. Dr. Newton finished his medical career relocating back to his hometown of Scranton in 1982, as a partner in the Lackawanna Medical Group, completing his career in 1995. While at LMG, he was also on the board of directors at Community Medical Center, and the chair of the hospital's Ethics Committee. Throughout his entire career, Dr. Newton was a highly dedicated professional, well known for his aptitude in diagnosis, kindness toward staff and compassion for patients. To the very end of his life, many touched by his medical skills and work ethic continued to express their gratitude.
Outside of his medical profession, Charles was a loving and dedicated husband and father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Time was also dedicated to being a Eucharistic minister and volunteer for numerous charitable causes. He enjoyed spending time traveling with his wife, attending his sons' sports events, scouting, gardening, tennis, bocce and skiing.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, June 3, at 10 a.m. at Church of St. Gregory, 330 N. Abington Road, Clarks Summit, by the Rev. John Lapera, pastor. Interment will immediately follow at Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton. Visitation at the church will start at 9 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Friends of the Poor, 2300 Adams Ave., Scranton PA 18509.
