Michael Pisa Obituary

Michael F. Pisa, 89, of Scranton, died Monday evening at the Jewish Home of Eastern, Pa. His wife of 64 years, the former Helen Mies, died April 2, 2012.

Born in Scranton, son of the late Carlo and Michelina DiGirolamo Pisa, he attended West Scranton High School and was a Naval veteran of World War II. He served in the Pacific theater aboard the USS San Jacinto (CVL 30), USS Lubbock (APA-197) and the USS PC 1130. He received the ALNAV 6-46, the Pacific Theater ribbon, the American Theater ribbon, Victory Medal and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon. Before retirement, he was employed by the Chamberlain Corp. of Scranton as a superintendent of production. He was a member of St. Lucy's Church, West Scranton and the Victor Alfieri Club.

Mike was a humble and generous man. He was selfless, always giving of himself to those he loved throughout life. He was most proud of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, leaving a wonderful legacy of love. He was truly a spectacular man.

Mike's family would like to extend immense gratitude to the nurses and staff of the Jewish Home of Eastern Pa., Dr. Kenneth Sebastianelli and Compassionate Care Hospice for the unwavering love and care given to Mike. A special thanks to Pam Pasko for taking care of Mike as she would have taken care of her own father.

Surviving are two daughters, Judy Sharr and husband, Alan; and Michele Vergnetti, Scranton; five grandchildren, Desiree Hartman and husband, Thomas; Danielle Burrier and husband, Shawn; Michele Backus and husband, Edward; Vanessa Thomas and husband, Benjamin; and Dominic Vergnetti II and wife, Stephenie; 12 great-grandchildren, Braden, Kieran and Samera Burrier, Shane Hartman, Brittney, Benjamin and Tristan Thomas, Gabriella Williams, Dominic III and Vincent Vergnetti, Madison and Bryn Backus; a sister, Mary Fogliani, Scranton; nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was also preceded in death by a son-in-law, Dominic Vergnetti; two sisters, Gentilina Genovese and Letitia Bonafede; and three brothers, Joseph, Alfred, and Chester Pisa.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 11 a.m. in St. Lucy's Church, 949 Scranton St., West Scranton. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 10 to 10:55 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Northeast Regional Autism Center at the Friendship House, 1509 Maple St., Scranton, PA 18505, in acknowledgement of his great-grandsons, Tristan Michael Thomas and Benjamin William Thomas.
