Thomas Joseph "Griff" Griffin, 73, of Scott Twp., passed away on Friday, Aug. 18, at his home.
He was born in Peckville on May 19, 1950, to Carl Griffin and Mary (Marcinko) Griffin.
Thomas attended Blakely High School. After school, he was employed by Anemostat, Scranton, where he worked for over 20 years. While employed, he also served in the United States Army from 1971 to 1973 in Germany. Thomas also had a business, Griffin Excavating, for many years. He was also employed by Biofor and Ease Diagnostics until retirement.
In 1982, he married Carol (Carlye) Welkom. They built their home in Scott Twp., where they raised their son, Ryan, and daughter, Kara (Becker).
Thomas became interested in the Justus Fire Company with his son, Ryan, in 1999. He officially joined in 2001 and in 2021 received his life membership. He devoted his days and many late nights to protecting and serving his community. He took pride in maintaining the emergency vehicles, assisting with many projects around the firehouse and driving the ambulance for medical calls. Thomas was very proud of his duty helping neighbors, their families and friends.
Throughout his life, Thomas enjoyed dirt track racing with his family and friends. He loved working on anything with a motor and was constantly rebuilding things in his garage. You could always count on him to make you laugh with his funny sense of humor. Thomas was overjoyed when he became a grandfather and loved making memories with his four grandchildren.
Besides his children, Ryan Griffin; and Kara (Griffin) Becker and her husband, Christopher, he is also survived by four grandchildren, Kensington Becker, Kristiana Griffin, Kaleb Griffin and Crew Becker; three sisters, Diane, (West Palm Beach, Fla.), Beverly, (West Palm Beach, Fla.) and Doreen (Port St. Lucie, Fla.); one aunt, Margie Smiegal; cousins, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, his grandparents; his granddaughter, Madison Becker; various aunts, uncles and cousins.
The family would like to thank Compassionate Care Hospice, Tara and Elaina for their amazing care and dedication to helping Thomas in his final days.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 9, at 12:30 p.m. at the Justus Volunteer Fire Company, 159 Fieldstone Drive, Scott Twp., where family and friends can join in a procession to his final resting place. Interment will follow with graveside services by Pastor Terry Drost and military honors

I first met Tom while going to Blakely School District many years ago (perhaps mid 1960's) and he was a good guy, fast forward many more years to the early 1980's and he was also a good neighbor. I feel very sorry as I never knew he was ill. RIP my friend. Our deepest condolences to the entire family! Steve and Elaine Mahoney
