BURLINGTON - Ioannis N. "John" Zangotsis, 85, of Burlington died at Alamance Regional Medical Center on Sunday, May 1, 2011 at 11:45 p.m.
John was born in Agios Dimitrios, Evrytanias, Greece to Nicholas S. Zangotsis and Maria Maroulis Zangotsis, both deceased. He was the husband of 53 years to Evdoxia "Lucy" Hilas Zangotsis, who survives.
At the age of 41, John immigrated from Agios Dimitrios, Evrytanias, Greece in 1967. Prior to leaving Greece for the United States, he operated a café/market. He was a veteran of the Greek Army and a retired owner and operator of John's Restaurant in Graham. He was a member of St. Katherine's Greek Orthodox Church where he served as chanter for 40 years. After his retirement, his most memorable times were spent with his grandchildren. He was a member of the Velouchi Chapter and was a big supporter of the local Greek community both in and outside of the church.
Mr. Zangotsis was a loving husband, father and grandfather. In addition to his wife of their home, survivors include three daughters, Evangelia "Liz" Karagounis and husband George of Charlotte, Maria James and husband Mickey of Archdale and Lambrini "Lisa" Bayne and husband Ernest of High Point; a sister, Evdoxia Balatsias of Charlotte; a brother, Stavros Zangotsis of Burlington; a sister-in-law, Vasiliki Zangotsis of Greece; seven grandchildren, Penelope Karagounis, Gloria Karagounis, Michael John James, Eva James, Margaret James, Crystal Bayne and Nicholas Bayne; and many nieces and nephews in the United States as well as Greece.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, George and Demitrios Zangotsis.
The funeral service will be conducted at St. Katherine's Greek Orthodox Church on Wednesday, May 4, 2011 at 2 p.m. by the Rev. George P. Vlahos. Burial will follow in Pine Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers will be his nephews.
The family will receive friends at St. Katherine's Greek Orthodox Church on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. with the Trisagion Service starting at 7 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Katherine's Greek Orthodox Church, 2150 West Front Street, Burlington, N.C. 27215 or to a local charity of one's choice.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to their many relatives and friends. The physicians and nursing staff at Alamance Regional Medical Center will always be remembered for their excellent care and treatment of Ioannis "John" Zangotsis.

Maria and Family. I am so sorry for you loss. I remember when the family came to Burlington. I was in 3rd grade at Fisher Street Elementary with Maria. I have had many meals at John's and no matter what they name that building...it will always be "John's". I will keep you and your family close in my thoughts and prayers.
