Anthony Serio Obituary

Anthony J. Serio, 61, a prominent Connecticut banker, passed away on Oct. 5, 2008, at his home in Westerly.
Born in Westerly on Oct. 16, 1946, he was the son of the late Anthony M. and Stella Montoya Serio. On Nov. 8, 1969, he married the former Rae Anne Gervasini.
Tony began his banking career in 1970 with Hartford National Bank, presently the Bank of America. With a venerable career of 38 years, he helped launch numerous small businesses, empowering aspiring entrepreneurs and establishing lifelong business relationships. He was also employed by The Washington Trust Company and U.S. Trust, retiring in 2008 as Senior Vice President/Senior Loan Officer of Commercial Lending at Putnam Bank in Putnam, Conn.
Tony was a member of many civic and social organizations, including the Bocce Club, Calabrese Club, North End Social Club, Thames Club of New London, LAMMS Club, Mystic Lions Club, Westerly Elks Club, past president of Children and Family Services of Connecticut, Salvation Army, Garde Arts Theater, Summer Music, and the Westerly-Pawcatuck YMCA. He was an original volunteer with the W.A.R.M. shelter and was a Westerly Hospital Incorporator.
He enjoyed boating, golf, music, cheering on the Red Sox and the Patriots. Most of all, he cherished spending time with his family on Block Island and in Naples, Fla.
Tony will be remembered for an enthusiastically outgoing nature. His unique sense of humor illuminated the amusing, encouraged our own pursuit of enjoyment and shined brightly with a lightheartedness that buoyed our spirits each and every day.
He instilled an exceptional love of life in family and friends, and we are better for having him as an integral part of our lives. Let us remember Tony with only a smile.
In addition to his wife of 39 years, he is survived by his daughters, Kate and companion Michael Crandall; Rebecca and companion Bryan Rashleigh; his son, John and companion Ashley Heon; sister, Anne D'Amico and husband Thomas; brother, William and wife Judy; brother, Walter and wife Ann of Mission Viejo Calif.; two sisters-in-law; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Calling hours will be held at the Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home on Tuesday from 3 to 7. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Michael Church, 60 Liberty St., Pawcatuck. Interment will be in River Bend Cemetery, Westerly, at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making donations to the Anthony J. Serio scholarship fund for a Westerly High School senior planning a career in banking or business. Donations may be sent to The Washington Trust Company, 23 Broad St., Westerly, RI 02891 in care of the scholarship fund, or in person at any Washington Trust branch.

Rae Anne and Family,
I know your loss is deep and painful. But, all I can remember of my cousin "Nails" is his laugh, twinkling eyes and rosy cheeks! He was always happy anytime I saw him. All of you will be in my prayers at this sad time .

I am deeply saddened to hear of Tony's death. It seems like yesterday, when we all would go see John and Jace play ball at the high school, I for one knew what he must have gone thru, and sad as it is,its a blessing. I'll miss you Nails and all your wisdom.

Dear Rae Ann, Kate, Rebecca and John and Family:

The GOOD LORD takes the best early in life and he sure picked a solid man when he took your husband, father and brother.

He was a person who enjoyed life and strived for the best for himself and his family.

"NAILS" will always be in the hearts of many of us in the Greater Westerly-Mystic-Block Island area one he treasured daily.

Our deepest sympathy during this time...

Dear Rae Anne,
I read with deep sadness and complete shock this morning of Tony's passing. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to you and your children. At college, I remember how excited you were every weekend to be going home to see "Nails". At your wedding he had everyone laughing and enjoying themselves. His sense of humor was infectious. I know how hard the losses in your life have been but I also know your strength. My love and prayers are with you. Please take care of yourself.
Love, Pam

I hadn't seen Tony since shortly after we all finished high school, but had spoken with him at various times during his banking career, and we both chuckled about his teen nickname of "Nails". He always seemed to have a certain swagger and a smile as a teen, and was always the consumate gentleman as an adult and as a banker. My sincere condolences to his family, and I know he will be missed.
