There was a wonderful ad campaign from the 70's...Hollywood royalty dripping in fur, artfully photographed by Avedon. Since his passing, I can't think of Charles without it coming to mind. It was titled, "What becomes a legend most?"
I would answer the ability to keep a friendship fresh for three decades, the willingness to share a lifetime of experience, a true generosity, both of spirit and of things material and the talent for telling the truth, when asked, no matter how brutal, but always with kindness and a positive spin.
Charles, you were a Diva, in the best sense of the word. You are sincerely appreciated, my dear, and much missed.
If there is a Heaven, I am sure it is even more beautiful for your being there. Don't forget to knife crease the pillows.

I'll miss Charles' sweet spirit. I knew the moment I met him he was a special angel on loan to Arcata from somewhere amazing. Bless him, and his family. It is comforting to know he and Michael are together again. Blessed be, Charles.

I worked with Charles at Eureka Community Clinic and looked forward to seeing him everyday--his always cheerful demeanor and thoughtful ways. He took good care of patients and staff, and brought us Dahlias! He was a wonderful person.
My heart goes out to his family and loved ones.

Charles was one of the first people I met after moving to Fieldbrook in 2003. Then we had the wonderful opportunity to work together in the local HIV field. He had such a passion for people living with HIV. He brought to the table a constant real sense of humor that sometimes caused those who didn't know him to blush. He holds a very special place in my heart as he and Michael opened their home to us (The Eureka Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence) to host our celebration party for our groups formal exequatur into the worldwide order of Sisters...He threw SOME Parties! Charles I will miss our long chats. You challenged my thinking and brought joy to my life. Much love to you as you join the nuns and loved ones of the above.

Charles, we will miss you dearly. It's daunting to drive past Essex Lane each night and think of your beautiful home at Tilted Acres no longer with Michael and you filling it with joy. Todd

Charles helped me through a difficult time of unknowing, when I was exposed to hiv and hep c though a needle stick. He was very supportive, and made sure that every avenue was taken in my course of treatments and blood draws ect. He was kind and made me feel at ease. Thankfully, I was not exposed, and I thank charles for his support and for educating me. He will be missed.
