Garrett Lewis Obituary

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The set decorator who earned Oscar nominations for his work on "Beaches," ''Glory," ''Hook" and "Bram Stoker's Dracula" has died.

A longtime friend of Garrett Lewis says he died Jan. 29 of natural causes. He was 77.

Wendy Weaver says Lewis worked as an actor on Broadway and in films and television before becoming a set decorator in the late 1970s. He appeared in "Hello, Dolly" on stage, "Funny Lady" on film and "The Julie Andrews Hour" on TV.

He became a set decorator after designing private homes for his celebrity friends and went on to work on 39 films, including "Pretty Woman," ''Mrs. Doubtfire" and "Steel Magnolias."

Lewis is survived by his sister, Jane Peiker, and five nieces and nephews.

I met Garrett in Amsterdam in the early to mid 1960's. He was playing in "Hello Dolly" at London's (from memory) Drury Lane Theatre. He was in Amsterdam for a weekend.

With astonishing generosity, he offered my partner and I "house" seats to a performance of "Hello Dolly" for the following week.

We went to London to learn that there were no longer house seats available for that night, but we were welcome to use his "house" tickets to an opening performance of another musical at (I think) the Prince of Wales Theatre, if we were interested. We sat centre, Dress Circle at the opening night of Barbra Streisand's "Funny Girl", thanks to the goodness of heart of Garrett.

This is a very late tribute to your brother and uncle and his friends. I stumbled upon the notice of his death and would like to offer this belated token of sympathy for the loss of a relative stranger who displayed unwarranted kindness to me, over 50 years ago. I remember him as gentle, charming and giving.

Garrett Lewis was a multi-talented actor, singer, dancer and artist. I has the pleasure of working with him on Broadway in "Vintage '60" and in Abbe Lane's nightclub act. His "design" eye took him into set decoration where he received multiple Oscar nominations. He was also the best friend anyone could ever have: kind, funny, caring and loyal. My wife and I will never forget him.

I did my first professional show with Garrett at L.A.s Ahmanson Th. in Fall 1971: "A Funny Thing..." starring Phil Silvers. He was one of three Proteans and showed the audience nightly how multi-talented and funny he was. Moreover, he was equally humorous and charming with the cast--especially those of us getting our starts. Thanks for the memories and for proving that "talented" and "nice" go hand-in-hand. Godspeed Garrett!!!

Mr. Lewis seemed like a person who lived his life to the fullest. Now he's asleep hoping to hear the words Lazarus heard when Jesus resurrected him saying "Lazarus come out" meaning from the grave. So for now rest in peace.

Know that Garrett's gifts transported us - almost without our full permission. Only as we exited the theater or turned off our player did we begin to know all he done. So too in his life - he transformed us in ways we will continue to enjoy long after he has departed this life.

Thank you Garrett - love and joy to all who loved him.
