Janet E. Schonwald died peacefully at her home in Modesto on Sunday morning, September 21, 2008.
Her parents, Clayton and Marquerite, and her husband, Dr. John W. Schonwald, precede Mrs. Schonwald in death. She is the sister of Donald Elliott and Robert Elliott of North Carolina, and Rev. John Elliott of Indiana. Five children, daughters Mary S. Kinnaman of Modesto, Ann S. Langley of Tracy, Barbara S. Baker of Muskegon, Michigan, Elizabeth S. Jannasch of Monterey, and son John E. Schonwald of Modesto, survive her. She has ten grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
Mrs. Schonwald was born in Logan County, Ohio, and raised in Angola, Indiana. She received her education at Western College in Ohio and the University of Michigan School of Nursing. She moved as a young wife to California in World War II. Following her husband’s discharge from the Navy, they settled in Eureka, California where Dr. Schonwald practiced pediatric medicine for 30 years.
Mrs. Schonwald was a registered nurse practicing in Eureka and later in Modesto where she retired from Memorial North Hospital at age 76. She was an active parishioner of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Modesto, and a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, Chapter BH, in Modesto. She volunteered at Laurel’s House serving young mothers and their babies and every year knit hundreds of hats, gloves and scarves for the homeless.
Mrs. Schonwald was a long-time supporter of the Modesto Symphony, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, the University of Michigan School of Nursing, St. Paul’s missionary outreach, and P.E.O. educational projects.
Interment services will be held in Cincinnati, Ohio later this month and memorial services are scheduled at, Christ The King Episcopal Church, 6443 Estelle Avenue, Riverbank, California at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, November 1. Friends traveling from out of town may reach the family c/o Ann Langley, 8710 Julie Lynne Circle, Tracy, CA. 95304.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Mrs. Schonwald’s name to Community Hospice Foundation, 4368 Spyres Way, Modesto, CA 95356.

It was so nice to have known your mom, both in Eureka, when growing up in such a small town was so perfect, and in Modesto, where we attended the same Episcopal church. She was such a wonderful lady, and I was lucky to have known her.

I worked with Jan in Labor and delivery, as well as in the newborn nursery until she retired. I have fond memories of Jan.
