Keith Murphy Obituary

Keith Thomas Murphy, beloved husband, father, son, brother and friend, died saving the lives of his children at Big Lagoon on February 22, 2004.

Keith was born in Grants Pass, Oregon, on June 9, 1963. Keith relocated with his family to Arcata in 1971. He attended St. Mary’s Elementary, Sunny Brae, St. Bernard’s and graduated from Arcata High School, Class of ‘81. Keith moved to Oregon where he attended college and returned to Humboldt County -Trinidad in 1998. Keith was instrumental in the acquisition and remodeling of the Murphy’s market in Trinidad and its operation for the past six years. He and his wife Michaela and family have been residents of that community for the past six years. Keith loved Trinidad and was very active in the local community and was a member of the Trinidad Chamber of Commerce and was a board member. Keith was always willing to donate his time to the community. His generous spirit will always be remembered.

A gifted athlete who loved the outdoors, Keith loved backpacking and camping in the Trinity Alps, hiking in Patrick’s Point State Park and ironically Big Lagoon was a favorite place for Keith to gather his thoughts and recharge. Keith also loved music and was known to play the harmonica occasionally. One of his favorite groups was the ‘Grateful Dead’. Keith was proud to have seen over 100 Dead shows.

Keith was a family man. He loved his wife and children and always included them in his life each day. He was so proud of his boys and everyone will remember him saying to daughter Caitlin, “Okay, Cait, whatever you want.” His sisters remember his broad smile and great hugs and unselfish support. He will be missed by his sisters, parents, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, friends, co-workers and customers will miss his friendly smile and great sense of humor.

Oh, Keith, we did not have you with us nearly long enough. We will miss you every day.

Keith is survived by his wife, Michaela Murphy; children, Tyler “Murph” and Caitlin; stepchildren, Tyler, Sean, and Breanne Butler-Smith and her son Joshua; mother, Carolyn Murphy of Rogue River, OR; father, Patrick Murphy and partner Suzanne Perry and daughters Kodi and Chanti of Arcata; grandfather, Al Ramsey of Rogue River, OR; sisters, Janette Murphy and husband Roy Barnette, Dana and husband Steve Holcomb, Tricia Murphy and her partner Zach; nieces, Jessica Wilson, Lindsay Wilson, Kelsey Dean, Carley Wilson, Bella Storee, Lizziegrace Barnette and Autumn Holcomb; nephews, Ramsey Barnette, Nick Dean, Tait Barnette, Dylan Wilson, Mason Wilson; great-nephew, Jordan Wilson; uncle and aunt, Don and Mary Rosebrook; cousins, Don Rosebrook and wife Jennifer, Shelly Goodrich and husband John, Susie Reeser and husband Bryan, and Debbie Rosebrook and her partner Doug. Keith is survived by many other aunts, uncles and cousins who live out of the area. He is survived by his longtime friends Jerry Hnilo, Ken Jarvela, Jim Wilson, Bill McKenzie, Kelly Carlin, Scott Cahill, Hose, Pif, Broderson, Geoff and many others too numerous to list. You know who you are, and he loved you all. He also leaves his most faithful companion, Peg dog, who helped find our beloved Keith.

Thanks to everyone who has been so wonderfully supportive. We love you. Your kindness in words, gestures, thoughts and prayers will be remembered. A service to celebrate Keith’s life will held this Saturday, March 6, 2004, at 2:00 p.m. at the school in Trinidad. All who would like to share in a celebration of this kind man’s life are invited to come.

Remember to let the people you love know every day. Keith did.

In lieu of flowers we encourage donations in Keith’s name to go to ‘The Humboldt County Search and Rescue’ organization.

Micheala, I'm so sorry we missed the service. We were out of town because of a crisis in our family. You must be very, very proud of your son, Tyler Butler-Smith, a real hero. We just want to let you know we care. You are in our thoughts. We hope that time will ease this horrible wound in your lives.

To the Whole Murphy family.

I was so very saddened for the loss of a wonderful person. I feel the pain for the whole Murphy family and am so sorry. I remember Kieth in High School and how nice he was to me and everyone. I would see Kieth picking his daughter Caitlin up at preschool where my son Sammy attends He look so happy and still had that beatiful smile. You will be missed so much. I am so sorry to the family and friends, my prayers are with you all.

Love Karen

Breanne, Tyler, and Michaela:

I am so sorry about what happened. I really wish I could have attended

the funeral. It is difficult, I'll admit, to wrap my mind around the reality and gravity of this tragedy, partly because of my geographical isolation from you, but mostly because of my inability to make sense of this loss -- of its abruptness -- of its apparent irrationality. I guess it will never make sense to me. I do understand, however, that Keith was a kind and generous person, who certainly made an impact on my life.

I will always remember him as a friend. If there's anything I can do, please call me.

To all of Murphy Family:

We have very fond memories of Keith as he graduated from high school with our son Jeff and use to come to our house during those years and I always remember that he was respectful and I always enjoyed his smile. Only the last two years when I had Jeff's boys from Auburn and that is where Jeff lives I would see him at the market and he was still his friendly and wonderful smile. I let Jeff know as soon as I had found out and this comes from our whole family, our girls who were twins and Jeff and my husband and I just want you to know you have been in our thoughts and are so sorry for this tragic happening and hope it will help you knowing that people do care. The Klopp Family, Frank and Joan, Jeff from Auburn, Sharon from Grass Valley, and Karen lives in Arcata also now. We sincerely hope each day will get better. Joan Klopp

I was friends with Keith in high school and was so sad to hear of his passing. Even though twenty years have passed, I still remember how warm and kind he was. When I think of Keith I think of how he enjoyed his music, and how he seemed to enjoy spending time with his friends. He and Jerry Hnilo were the best of friends. He will be missed by all who knew him. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

We will always remember and love our dear neighbor and friend Keith. Our lives will never be the same without his call of "Dave-o" floating over the fence. Dave will miss his "little buddy" and their talks by the wood stove (which Keith helped to set up) in Dave's shop. If you hear AC/DC blasting from our house it is just Dave making sure Keith can hear it. We love you all and our prayers are always with you.

My daily prayers and loving thoughts are with Keith and his entire family, especially his mother, my very dear friend Carolyn Murphy. Keith was a dear dear friend of mine and I had nothing but the greatest respect for him, he was a wonderful father, as I spent much time with him while he lived in Oregon and was raising his son Tyler. His kindnss and sweetness will be forever remembered. Love and Light to his family.

Terri (Peterson) Trimeloni

I went to high school with Keith. He was always so nice. And in the last couple of years I was up in Trinidad for quilting classes at the quilt shop and I'd go into the store to get lunch where I'd run into Keith occasionally. It was always so nice to see him & visit for a few minutes. I'm so sorry that his life was cut so short. He will always be in my memories. My thoughts are with all of his family and friends.
