William Boak Obituary

William Neil "Bill" Boak Passed peacefully in his home on Sunday, August 25, 2013. He is survived by his six children: Marijane Johnson (Mike), John (Candy), Patti Williams (Kevin), Billy (Cindy), Kathleen Ausburn (Greg), Colleen Boak, and fifteen grandchildren, twenty-one great grandchildren, and three great- great-grandchildren. Bill was born in 1927, the only child of Ted and Edith Boak. He spent his childhood in the woods learning the trade of his father, a logger, splitting wood for the original steam donkeys. He was an avid outdoorsman, mastering hunting, fishing, sailing and archery. At age 12 his skills earned him the West Coast Championship in archery where he held the cup from the time of his eligibility until he was 18 - as a result he had the rare opportunity to have lunch with Errol Flynn. As a young adult, he followed the timber industry with his father and mother throughout Washington and Oregon. After high school he went on to college in Colorado Springs and joined the US Navy near the end of the war. He returned to Roseburg, Oregon where he met and married Bettie Brannon in 1951. They built a life alongside Ted & Edith in the timber industry, founding Ted & Bill Boak Logging Company. This partnership became Boak Logging Company, which has continued on for five generations. As an activist in the timber industry, he willfully took up the fight for sustainable logging to safeguard the livelihood of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He participated in the convoy to the White House in 1977 with the famous carved Redwood Peanut. Well known for his hunting skills and as a black powder expert, he had more "one shot kills" than most riflemen on safari. He was active in various organizations such as Safari Club International, Northern California Scaling Bureau, Trinity Houseboat Owners Association, and the NRA, to name a few of his ongoing interests. He enjoyed his role as range master and cannon shooter, and loved anything firing on black powder! Intertwined in all of this was his immeasurable sense of humor: he did not often miss an opportunity to express his sharp wit or opinion. Anyone who had met him would know his incredibly diverse character. Dad stressed to his family that he had lived the life most men dream of: he had spent his life with the woman of his dreams and had the hunt of a lifetime in Africa. He asked us not to be sad at his passing, reminding us how wonderful his life had been. We want to thank the staff of Timber Ridge; James, Don, and Tim of Assisted Living Services; and the many friends who visited for making Dad's last few months and days comfortable, peaceful, and filled with dignity and respect. We cannot thank you enough for your skills and compassion. We welcome everyone who knew Dad to bring your stories of Bill Boak "the Chief" and join us in his Celebration of Life, Sunday September 29, 2013 at Azalea Hall, McKinleyville, from 2 to 5 pm. So sad to hear of Bill's passing. My memories are mainly of high school years and his talents in sports. He was also a good friend, and later, both he and his wife, Bettie, were both friends and neighbors for a time. Friends always. My deepest feelings for his family.

I met grandpa Boak when I was 12! What a great man to have known. Him and Betty treated me like family from day one, then having their great grandson made it even that much better. What a wonderful man and wonderful family! Love you all

As a much younger forester (1980s - 90s)I knew Bill as a vibrant story teller and a tough logger who appeared to enjoy a challenging setting just to prove he could do it. I watched Boak Logging at work on Big Laggon and Van Duzen areas under LP ownership. Now in my own older age class do I fully treasure and appreciate the stories and experiences. I feel honored to have known such a fine icon of the timber industry. Good bye Bill.

Dear Boak family,
My husband, Chas, told me everyday "We have to go to Bill's services, he was one of the good ones." Never in a million years would I have thought Chas would pass away and have his own services the day before Bill's. Chas posted Bill's obit on the wall of his office so we wouldn't forget. It is so sad to say we lost 2 "good ones" and I wanted to send my condolences. I know Chas is up in heaven selling all the old timers wire rope. He never stopped working here on Earth and I know he won't now. So sorry for your loss. Take care.

I am so sorry to read about Bill. When I worked at the Willow Creek Forest Srvs., office, Bill was always my favorite logger to stop by. Though he was there to do serious business, he always had a good story to tell. Last time I saw him was at Redwood Acres Logging Show, about 8 or 9 years ago. I know he is missed by many people.

Bill was known and respected by many, including me. As many have said and I agree, he had a great sense of humor. Bill trusted us, with welding and machining, to keep his logging jobs operations going. The hard working family was for years support for us too. We used to tell Bill, Betty, John, and lil' Bill that we appreciated their work and our job security with the comment "you guys can break a steel ball", meaning that we would always have repairs to make. Bill made an impact on my life with his common sense, humor, and positive attitude (well most of the time anyway). Bill Sr. will always be remembered by me. I feel blessed to have known him. Since retirement from the repair trade, time with the family has been limited. But know that my thoughts are with you.

I wish I had known you better as a person, Mr. Boak, but you have lived across the street from my Grampa and the rest of the Ragains for as long as anyone can remember, and my mom's childhood is filled with stories of you, your family, your home, and much more. Our thoughts are with your loved ones at this time, and I wish that your handsome legacy and the fond memories they share of you provide solace at this time.
