Stanley Orr Obituary

WAITSFIELD - Stanley R. Orr, 92, of Radcliffe Drive, passed away in the comfort of his family at the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2009. Born in Calais on Sept. 3, 1916, he was the son of the late Fred and Mabel (Slayton) Orr. On Aug. 18, 1945, Stanley married the former Eleanor Wells in Plainfield.

Stanley was a graduate of the former Plainfield High School and as a young man he worked on the family farm in Calais. His specialty was raising turkeys. In 1946, he purchased the Hardware Store in Marshfield and with it founded a plumbing and heating business. Moving to Waitsfield in 1959, Stanley continued his plumbing and heating business and in addition, with his wife, began a ski lodge known as Orr's Ark, a longtime institution in the Mad River Valley. Stanley retired in 1975 and with Eleanor, began traveling in their mobile home throughout the lower 48 states as well as Alaska, an adventure they completely enjoyed for nearly 30 years. Stanley also loved hunting and fishing.

His memberships included the Couples Club in Waitsfield, the Waitsfield United Church of Christ, the Valley Rotary Club and he was a founding member of the Mad River Ridge Runners Snowmobile Club.

Stanley is survived by his wife of 63 years, Eleanor Orr of Waitsfield; a daughter, Deborah Orr of Moretown; a son, Reginald Orr and his wife, Kathi of Waitsfield; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; as well as nieces, nephews and extended family. Stanley was predeceased by two children, Peggy Orr and Brian Orr, as well as three sisters and seven brothers.

Memorial services will be held from the Waitsfield United Church of Christ on Wednesday, Jan. 7, at 6:30 p.m. The family requests that flowers be omitted; rather memorial gifts would be appreciated to the Mad River Valley Ambulance Service, PO Box 305, Waitsfield, VT 05673. Debbie & Reggie: Here is something that comforted me when I lost my Dad.

What is a Father?

A father is a special man
Who cares for his family...
He helps his children without complaint
And gives his love so freely.

With problems one cannot solve,
a father can find the cure...
Happy times are also shared,
wonderful memories, for sure.

Fathers teach important morals
to be kind, honest and true...
They are models to their childen
In all they say and do.

Father, you are my dearest friend,
You're always by my side...
Guiding me through life's walkway,
My Love for you, I cannot hide.

Debbie, When you called and told me about your Dad passing away--my heart went out to you- immediately. It brought back the same feelings of losing my Dad in 04.

I remember when we were young and how much I enjoyed spending time with your family at "The ARK." WONDERFUL TIMES & MEMORIES!!! I also remember square dancing with your parents!! Boy, could they shake a leg!!! Wow, that was a long time ago!! Of late, I remember the cribbage games--and how much your Dad enjoyed playing cards and how fast he could count the points!!

You were blessed to have such a wonderful man for a father & friend!!

Sherry, your friend always

Dear Eleanor and family, as we have said before Eleanor Stanley lived a life that most would envy. An adventurous soul who loved life and all that is in it, as well as his adoring wife beside him enjoying his adventures. Look out heaven, it will never be the same, Stanley is looking it over. We love you Sally & Bud Sells

We wish that we could be there with you but will be up later in a few weeks to spend time with you. We always had such good times with you and Stan. Dancing, looking for deer in the early P.M., or just gabbing. We love you and you will be in our thoughts always. Love, Velma and Kenny

I'm so sorry to hear about Stanley's passing. I'm sure our dad will welcome his company as they are both in a better place. I will always remember Stanley from his time in Tucson at our home. He could fix anything -- including my skis. I was thinking about him just yesterday! The Orr's were a welcome addition to our ranch and I enjoyed hearing about their travels. My thoughts are with the entire Orr family.
