Velma Davis Wilson

1922 - 2023

WILSON, Velma Davis, 101, of Richmond passed away on October 9, 2023. She was predeceased by her husband of 68 years, Charles H. Wilson, Jr. She is survived by her son Charles H. "Bert" Wilson III, and his wife, Linda; daughter, Robin Wilson Sledge and her husband, Jay; two grandchildren, Angela Wilson (Ryan Jones), and Jesse Ryan Sledge and his wife, Lucy; and one great-grandchild, Nolan Wilson Jones. Mrs. Wilson was born in Richmond on January 25, 1922, and was a lifelong resident of Richmond. Educated in the Richmond Public School system, she graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1939. In her youth, she enjoyed frequent visits to the Virginia beaches with family and friends. She was employed by the Aetna Life Insurance Company until she married Charles in 1948. Mrs. Wilson volunteered for many years with the Bethlehem Little League and Meals on Wheels. She dedicated many hours in support of her children's school and sports activities. She was a longtime member of Monument Heights Baptist Church. She and her husband had the good fortune of being able to travel the world together for several years, often joined on these trips by some of their close, lifelong friends. After retirement, she and Charles spent the winter months in Hutchinson Island, Florida, for many years. She remained engaged in many community activities in later life, even after her husband passed away in 2016. She will be fondly remembered by all who knew her. Her family extends special thanks to Lena at The Hermitage and to Beth with At Home Hospice for the exceptional care and kindness shown to our mother as her life wound down.

A memorial service will be held at Monument Heights Baptist Church on Friday, December 15, 2023, at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends starting at 10 a.m. in the sanctuary and again immediately following the service in the fellowship hall. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Monument Heights Baptist Church at 5716 Monument Avenue, Richmond Va. 23226.
