Betty Bishop Obituary

Betty Lavonne Bishop, 84, passed away Monday, Dec. 5, 2022, at her home with her family by her side.

She was born on March 13, 1938, in Hillsboro, Ohio, the daughter of the late Herbert Lee Countryman and Netalie (Gall) Countryman.

Mrs. Bishop was a 1957 Hillsboro High School graduate, and she earned her associate's degree in business from Southern State Community College. Mrs. Bishop held many positions throughout Hillsboro and Highland County. She was Hillsboro mayor for 15 years, Greenfield city manager and community development director, CEO of Turning Point, and she was instrumental in bringing Weastec and Southern State Community College to Hillsboro. She helped start the girls softball Little League program at Shaffer Park, and she was recently inducted into the Highland County Historical Society Hall of Fame. Mrs. Bishop was a member of the Hillsboro Church of the Nazarene, where she was a board member, building fund member, prime time director, and she was their Sunday School superintendent for many years.

She was a student of the Bible, and she could often be found visiting nursing homes, sharing the love of Jesus. She enjoyed traveling with her husband, Lee, gardening, and tending to all her flowers. She loved her family, raising her seven children, and spending as much time as she could with her grandchildren. She will be greatly missed.

Mrs. Bishop is survived by her husband of 55 years, Lee Bishop, whom she married on July 1, 1967, in Hillsboro; seven children, Randy (Debbie) Sanders of Hillsboro, Mary Jean (Randy) Butler of Hillsboro, Angie (David) Blair of Hillsboro, Terri Bishop of Hillsboro, Sheri (Chris) Morton of Grove City, Brandi (Travis) Reeves of Washington C.H. and Jay Bishop of Mesa, Arizona; 18 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren; three siblings, Ronnie (Patsy) Countryman of Satellite Beach, Florida, Gary (Jan) Countryman of New Braunfels, Texas and Karen (Roger) Bennington of Hillsboro; three sisters-in-law, Phyllis (James) Cowherd of Greensburg, Kentucky, Patsy Bishop of Greensburg, Kentucky and Regina Bishop of Greensburg, Kentucky; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Amber Nicole Blair.

Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 9, 2022, at the Hillsboro Church of the Nazarene.

Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2022, at the Hillsboro Church of the Nazarene. Pastor Tom Zile will officate. Burial will follow services in the Hillsboro Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Betty's name to the Hillsboro Church of the Nazarene Building Fund, 8230 U.S. Route 50, Hillsboro, Ohio 45133; or tthe Highland County Historical Society, 151 E. Main St., Hillsboro, Ohio 45133.

Lee and Family.... Betty brings to mind so many wonderful memories with that big smile and second to none work ethic. I had the pleasure and honor of teaching the children that she and Lee raised.I served on City Council with her. She is a lifetime friend who always had my respect. Betty and Lee were always together. Their visitation in nursing homes was constant. She was a true community leader. She drove a bus for Hillsboro schools, worked in Hillsboro and Greenfield to improve whatever she could. Thank you (family members) for sharing your sweet mother with us.
