Zac Henderson Obituary

Zac Henderson

Formerly of Burkburnett - Zac Henderson went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and his beloved parents on April 19, 2020.

Also known as Zacie or "Little Zac," he was born in Jena, Louisiana, on October 14, 1955, to "Big Zac" and Auline Henderson, a former Texas Tech football player and Baylor homecoming queen. In 1963, the family, including older sister Carol, moved to Burkburnett after Big Zac was offered a job as the high school football coach.

Little Zac grew up to be 6'1" and one of the most accomplished and honored athletes in Burkburnett High School history. His friends will tell you he was the greatest because he did not just excel in one sport but in four, lettering in football, baseball, basketball, and track. The Oklahoman described Zac as "one of the most under-rated OU football players of all time."

Zac was a member of the 1972 Bulldog AAA Regional Football Championship team. In 1973, he was on the Bulldog basketball team when they won the district championship for the first time in 24 years. He also ran track as a sprinter and was the district champion in the 100yard dash in 1974. In '73 and '74, he made the All-District baseball team.

During one 1974 Bulldog baseball game, a teammate recalls sitting next to Zac in the dugout when two men walked up and identified themselves as high school scouts for the Cincinnati Reds. (The next two years, the Reds would win the World Series.) The head scout told Zac that the Reds had been watching him and were ready to make him their #1 pick in an upcoming high school draft if he would guarantee to accept the offer. Zac politely declined and said his future would be playing football for either OU or LSU. The men took Zac and his parents out to dinner that evening and were turned down again.

Zac signed to play football for the Oklahoma Sooners. At OU Zac was a four-year starter at free safety including 1974 as the first full-time true freshman starter after the NCAA reinstated freshman eligibility. Upon learning of Zac's death, Coach Barry Switzer told reporter Berry Tramel that Zac "was a great player. He jumped right to the top right away." Switzer said Zac started as a true freshman not because the Sooners were shallow in the defensive backfield but because "he was that good. Hell, this was '74. He could run. First thing you gotta do, you gotta know how to run, how to practice. "Zac had good speed" Switzer said. "That's why he could play. He was smart, he was big, and he was fast." OU won the National Championship Zac's freshman year, undefeated.

His first year as a Sooner, Zac wore the jersey he was assigned upon arrival: No. 1, but at the end of that year, he asked if he could switch to No.19 to honor his dad. In his last three years at OU, Zac wore No. 19, the same number Big Zac had worn during his college football career at Texas Tech.

The Sooners repeated as National Champions in 1975. In 1977 the New York Athletic Club named Zac college football's defensive back of the year (an award renamed the Jim Thorpe Award in 1986). That same year he was unanimously voted All-American safety. He was a three-time All-Big Eight selection and made 15 college career interceptions, which ranks No. 4 for most interceptions in Oklahoma history.

Zac still holds the OU record as the all-time leading tackler in defensive backs: 299 tackles. He played in the NFL for the Philadelphia Eagles, coached by Dick Vermeil, including playing in Super Bowl XV. He played four years in the Canadian Football League and in 1982, while playing for the Toronto Argonauts, was named Eastern Conference Defensive Player of the Year.

Following his retirement from football, Zac worked in the oil industry when he wasn't on a golf course or fund-raising for the Sooners which usually also involved being on a golf course. He loved nothing better than playing golf with his dad (until Big Zac's death in 2006) and his friend since 1963, David Robinson. And he loved any time he spent with his daughter Laura. He died at home in Oklahoma City of natural causes.

Zac is survived by daughter Laura, sister Carol, beloved aunts, uncles, and cousins, three cats, two dogs, and a lifetime of cherished friends, many of whom he knew from before Little League sign-ups. It was never an athletic accomplishment or award that made Zac's face light up with a smile and his eyes twinkle; it was seeing a friend, someone who really knew him, not just knew of him. If the encounter also involved golf, all the better.

Viewing will be from 8am to 5pm Friday April 24th at Owens and Brumley Funeral Home in Burkburnett. Graveside services will be held at 11am on Saturday April 25th at the Burkburnett Cemetery pavilion. A Celebration of Life memorial will be held in Burkburnett when CoVid restrictions are lifted. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Meals on Wheels program at the Burkburnett Senior Center. Condolences may be sent to Owens and Brumley Funeral Home in Burkburnett or online at www.owensandbrumley.com.

Carol,

Belatedly, please accept my deepest condolences on the loss of your brother, Zacie. While we were classmates, I never got to know your brother aside from appreciating what an outstanding athlete and sportsman he was. Only now, through our talks, am I gaining a greater appreciation for who he was as a human being and brother. It is clear that he had a pure heart and irrepressible spirit-- younger brothers seem to have that quality. I know that you will carry him always in your heart and memories, as you should.

I've known Zac since I was 14 years old. One of the greatest to ever play at Oklahoma and one of the nicest individuals you'd ever meet. He was very modest and never boasted about his athletic career. He loved his family especially his daughter. He would give you the shirt off his back. Rest in Peace Zac!

As a wide-eyed freshman wide receiver in 1976, I was blessed to receive the ultimate survival advise from Zac..."don't block Jerry Anderson low. He doesn't like that"....I should've listened. Zac's lead-by-example style and generosity were evident on day one, and exemplified the kind of leader, teammate and winner he was. My thoughts and prayers are with the entire Henderson family. God bless his memory, and his legacy as a true Sooner and a finer man.

I was very saddened when I heard of Zac's passing. Even though it had been years since we talked, I will always consider Zac and his family good friends of mine. When we first met in Burk, we immediately were good friends. That friendship deepened in high school. I am so glad to know that one day, we will meet again.

My condolences to Zacs family. I first met Zac at the 1974 Oil bowl. Zac single handedly beat us that night. The next week we were teammates at OU. Great athlete, even better person. RIP Teammate.

Laura, my prayers are with you and your family. I was you and your dad's family doctor in Edmond for many years. I so enjoyed talking to your dad and later you, each time you all would come in. He was a gentle giant that always spoke fondly of everyone. He always had a great story for me from his playing days. I was at OU about 5 years after your dad. He always kept that small town Texas persona. All the staff loved him and he could always talk his way in to an earlier appointment...this was usually for you and not for him. It saddens me to read of his passing but I know he is in a better place and I hope to have a good visit with him in heaven one day. I am still in Edmond if you need anything. Otherwise, praying for you all.

1982, Zac and I were trying to catch a flight from DFW to OKC. It was stormy and the last flight was canceled. I had to be in OKC the next morning so I had a company plane dispatched to Dallas to pick me up. I knew who Zac was, but didn't know him personally. We struck up a conversation and I relayed that I had a plane heading our way and he could come along. I was approximately his age, so he was understandably apprehensive , however plane soon arrived and Zac and I made it to OKC and became long time friends. He had an office with us in the 90s however it was seldom used as he was likely on the golf course. We had many great times together and it was an adventure to have him as a friend. Zac liked being famous and was a fine example to current players how to greet fans and leave them with a good impression. He always had the same grin on his face. Rest in Peace my friend. On occasion, a friend of mine, Late Fred HAHN we would sit and visit with Zac at The Dugout on N May Ave. He always brought, his love for his daughter. We talked Oilfield; as, we both were Oil Field Trash. What a awesome athlete and know one knew better than Barry Switzer. Everyone admired him and what he stood for. He will remain in the hearts of us; who remain. Farewell #19.

My husband, Duane Baccus, played football with Zac at OU. Duane passed away in July 2018. Duane actually recruited Zac and I got him a date for his visit to the school. Duane was also Zacs insurance agent for a time in Flower Mound, Texas. I hope they are reminiscing in Heaven about all the great games they got to play in at OU together with all their other teammates that are there too. We always loved Zac! My deepest sympathies, Leslie Baccus

My first memory of Zac was in the summer of 1971 when he played on Little League baseball all-star team coached by my father that won the Texas State title. I continued to follow his athletic career at OU (Boomer Sooner) & in the pros at Philadelphia and in the CFL with Toronto. Burkburnett can be proud of not only his athletic acumen but also the outstanding human being that he was during his life! RIP Zac! You will be missed!

I would just like to offer my condolences to the family. As a long time Toronto Argonaut fan Zac was one of my all time favourite players. He played the game so intensely and was one of the hardest and smartest hitters I have ever seen. I had the pleasure of meeting him after a game one time and was talking to him about what a fan I was of his. He was so appreciative and kind (which is not always the case with a lot of sports figures) which impressed me even more than the way he played the game. I just wanted to let the family know that he was loved and appreciated by the Toronto Argonaut fans.

Just a week ago, I texted with Zac to check on him, not realizing that it would be our last conversation this side of heaven. We have been best friends since first grade. A million treasured memories are racing through my head, thanking God for each one of them. We laughed, competed, defended, challenged, consoled and loved one another as brothers more than friends. We foolishly think that there is always more time to catch up later, but reality often reminds of the swiftness of life. In memory of Zacs incredible wealth of family and friends, may we all become better at staying engaged with those we love and value. Big Zac loved to play golf with Zac and me, laughing at us going after each other to win at all costs. Even though he excelled in his OU football career, I always told him that deep down inside he wanted to be a Longhorn! One year after OU thrashed my Horns in the Cotton Bowl, Zac took me in the OU locker room (in spite of my burnt orange cowboy hat) to meet his teammates. What an honor and a great memory for me of our strong friendship.

Save me a good seat, dear friend, at the throne of grace before our glorious King.

Prov 18:24... One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

Thanks, Zac, for all the great times together and for the eternal ones ahead of us soon. Love you and Carol.

Carol, my heart hurts for you in the loss of your little brother. One of the good "kids", always ready to pick up a ball , but never to busy to take time to visit and ask how you were. I am sorry I won't part of the outpouring of support and to celebrate his life, but my prayers from El Paso will.
