It was an honor to know Al. One of the many things he did was to serve as a swimming and water safety instructor for the many law enforcement officers that attended the New York State Office of Parks and Recreation Marine Law Enforcement School. Al was the consummate professional. I took a good deal of information that Al shared with me and modeled the various Water Safety and Rescue Swimming curricula for the Nassau County Police Department. Al was a "stand-out". I´m sure he touched many lives. God bless!

I'm 50 now and was thinking of Al. I looked him up and found this lovely Obituary. He was a lovey human. I met him twice when I traind for my BSA Water Front Director.
I appreciated his tough but gentle style.
Here's just a little anecdote in case family might see this 9 years after this obituary was posted and smile.
My first summer with the BoyScouts, I was hired to be a water front director and had no experience at all. I went to my first day at BSA training camp. After a morning of lessons, we had lunch and then a rest period. A group of guys who had been friendly enough in the morning, asked me if I had ever seen an unbreakable knot. I said I hadn't. And gullible me put my two wrists out, they way that they were gesturing for me to do. Then they tied my wrists together and swiftly hung the loop on other end of the rope to a nail high above a doorway and left.
Yes of course, I felt exactly as stupid as one shoud feel given the situation that I was now in.
I knew everyone was coming back after siesta, I wasn't worried about my safety at all, just my pride.
Thankfully, when the door opened, only 10 minutes later, it was Al. He smiled kindly at me with my hands over my head and chuckled a littel bit when he said, "They got ya, huh". He grabbed a chair and stood on it to unhook the rope and untied my wrists and said. "Are you going to get fooled like this again?" I shook my head no and swore that it was the last time. That was the last hazing, maybe because I got a little smarter, maybe because they just didn't need to haze me anymore. Or maybe just maybe, they knew he was looking out for me.
I met him again two years later, and he told me he was proud of me. He had noticed that my swimming had improved and commented that he knew I had been practing. He is well remembered.

Eric, Gary and Lisa. I was saddened to hear of your Dads passing. My memories of him were larger than life. Some of my fondest childhood memories were from my time in Latham. Boy Scout camp at Thatcher Park in February was one of them.
