Albert Cahill Obituary

Cahill, Albert Edward LATHAM Born in East Orange, N.J. in 1928, Albert Edward Cahill passed away peacefully on February 4, 2014. If you asked Albert who he was, the reply would be, "I'm a Marine!" Joining at age 17 in 1945, he served proudly during World War II, primarily in China. An enthusiastic, lifelong volunteer, Albert held prominent positions in the Boy Scouts of America and the American Red Cross since 1939 and 1943 respectively, active until very recently. As one of the nation's foremost authorities on water safety, he served on both national and local levels, training tens of thousands of kids and adults in varying degrees of skill and responsibility. A recipient of numerous BSA awards including the prestigious Silver Beaver, Antelope and Buffalo recognitions, he authored various manuals and procedures still in use today, implementing them in National Aquatic Schools from 1949 to 2010. He was an active member of the National Health and Safety committee for more than 35 years, as well as the Twin Rivers Council in Albany. A faculty director and instructor in more than 50 American Red Cross Aquatic Schools, Albert was chairman and member of the Albany area health and safety committee, creating programs for lifeguarding, CPR, small craft and first aid. Since 1985, he personally conducted water safety instructor and swimming classes at Shaker High School, certifying an estimated 5000 boys and young adults. A graduate of Ithaca College in 1953, his professional life began as a broadcaster on the Rural Radio Network. In 1956, he moved into TV in Plattsburgh at WPTZ as sports anchor, subsequently assuming the same position in 1961 at WAST, Channel 13 in Albany. In addition to ski and bowling programs, he hosted one of areas first morning interview shows. Albert changed career paths in the 1970s as he became marketing director at Jay Peak Ski Resort. Following this he served as a consultant for New York Parks, evaluating and implementing programs for various pools and beaches. He is survived by his sons Eric and Gary Cahill; and daughter, Lisa West. He was the proud grandfather of Jennifer, Christopher, Jason and Gillian, and great-grandfather to Emma. The family would like to thank the staff at the Albany Stratton V.A. Medical Center for their support, in particular ADHC. A memorial service and interment will be held in late spring at the Gerald B.H. Solomon National Cemetery, Saratoga. Details will be announced at a later date. It was an honor to know Al. One of the many things he did was to serve as a swimming and water safety instructor for the many law enforcement officers that attended the New York State Office of Parks and Recreation Marine Law Enforcement School. Al was the consummate professional. I took a good deal of information that Al shared with me and modeled the various Water Safety and Rescue Swimming curricula for the Nassau County Police Department. Al was a "stand-out". I´m sure he touched many lives. God bless!

I'm 50 now and was thinking of Al. I looked him up and found this lovely Obituary. He was a lovey human. I met him twice when I traind for my BSA Water Front Director.
I appreciated his tough but gentle style.
Here's just a little anecdote in case family might see this 9 years after this obituary was posted and smile.
My first summer with the BoyScouts, I was hired to be a water front director and had no experience at all. I went to my first day at BSA training camp. After a morning of lessons, we had lunch and then a rest period. A group of guys who had been friendly enough in the morning, asked me if I had ever seen an unbreakable knot. I said I hadn't. And gullible me put my two wrists out, they way that they were gesturing for me to do. Then they tied my wrists together and swiftly hung the loop on other end of the rope to a nail high above a doorway and left.
Yes of course, I felt exactly as stupid as one shoud feel given the situation that I was now in.
I knew everyone was coming back after siesta, I wasn't worried about my safety at all, just my pride.
Thankfully, when the door opened, only 10 minutes later, it was Al. He smiled kindly at me with my hands over my head and chuckled a littel bit when he said, "They got ya, huh". He grabbed a chair and stood on it to unhook the rope and untied my wrists and said. "Are you going to get fooled like this again?" I shook my head no and swore that it was the last time. That was the last hazing, maybe because I got a little smarter, maybe because they just didn't need to haze me anymore. Or maybe just maybe, they knew he was looking out for me.
I met him again two years later, and he told me he was proud of me. He had noticed that my swimming had improved and commented that he knew I had been practing. He is well remembered.

Eric, Gary and Lisa. I was saddened to hear of your Dads passing. My memories of him were larger than life. Some of my fondest childhood memories were from my time in Latham. Boy Scout camp at Thatcher Park in February was one of them.
