George Backhaus Obituary

Backhaus, George R. Jr. POESTENKILL George R. Backhaus Jr., 70, of Route 66, died Monday, December 4, 2017, at the Hospice Inn at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany, after a long illness. Born in Troy, he was the son of the late George R. Backhaus and May W. Capelle Backhaus. He had resided in the Poestenkill area all his life. He was a graduate of Averill Park High School, class of 1965 and earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from SUNY Albany. George was a biology teacher at Tamarac High School for 32 years, retiring in 2001. He was a member of the Troy Germania Hall Association and enjoyed traveling. Survivors include his companion, Russell Bonesteel, Poestenkill; a daughter, Michelle M. (Christopher Overcash) Backhaus, Colts Neck, N.J.; a son, Brian R. (Stacey) Backhaus, Greenfield Center; four grandchildren; and a niece and three nephews. He was predeceased by a sister and brother-in-law, Marjorie and Richard Clark. Relatives and friends may call at the Bryce Funeral Home, Inc., 276 Pawling Ave., Troy on Saturday, December 9, from 10-11 a.m., with a funeral service at 11 a.m. with Matthew Sousa, officiating. Interment will be in the Albany Rural Cemetery, Menands. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of George R. I'm so saddened to hear of Mr. Backhaus passing. He was truly a great man, a fun person, and an amazing teacher. I was very blessed to have had him for a couple of years as a teacher, and also got to take many trips with Mr. Backhaus though out the school years. He was without a doubt my favorite teacher, He was one of a kind! Please know my thought, prayers, and love are with you all during this time of sorrow.
