Dr. Ivor L. Preiss

Preiss, Dr. Ivor L. LATHAM Dr. Ivor Louis Preiss died peacefully in his sleep on March 11, 2021, at his home in Latham, N.Y., two weeks short of his 88th birthday. He survived a major stroke in 2016. Born in Manhattan and raised in Westchester County, N.Y., Ivor graduated from Roosevelt High School in Yonkers and went on to earn a BS at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, and an MS and PhD at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. After several years as a researcher and lecturer at Yale University, he settled with his wife and children in Latham, N.Y., and became a professor at his alma matter, RPI, in the chemistry department, where he taught and conducted research for more than 30 years. He was also a researcher and educator for General Electric and worked on projects with the National Institutes of Health. In addition to his dedication to his students and his professional life, Ivor also loved being on his sailboat on Lake Champlain, was a serious follower of baseball, and continued to be an active member of his college fraternity, the Pi chapter of Zeta Psi. He had a deft sense of humor; his favorite movies were Young Frankenstein and early Woody Allen films. Ivor is survived by his wife of 50 years, Lorraine (Dixson); his daughters, Susan Preiss, Sharon Preiss, Sandra (Lane) McCarthy, and Michelle (David) Dischiavo; his son, Bradley (Alix) Preiss; multiple grandchildren; and his first wife, Jean Rose. His first great-grandchildren (twins) will be born this summer. Donations in Ivor's name may be made to the Arthritis Foundation at Arthritis.org. He will be remembered at a Mass at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church in Latham, NY, on Sunday, March 14. The family expects to hold a memorial for him in the summer.
