Jeffrey Sauter Obituary

Sauter, Jeffrey G.
GLENVILLE - Jeffrey G. Sauter, 66, died unexpectedly due to health complications on Wednesday morning, September 13, 2023.
Born in Troy, the son of Eleanor (Quigley) and the late Glen Sauter, Jeff grew up in the Bellevue area of Schenectady and was a 1975 graduate of Bishop Gibbons. Upon graduation, he attended North Dakota State University for two years before returning to Schenectady, earning his associate degree in criminal justice at S.C.C.C., and entering the Police Academy.
In August, Jeff began his 44th year in law enforcement, working for local (Coxsackie, Menands and Schenectady), State (Attorney General's Office), and federal (DEA) agencies. At the time of his death, Jeff was employed as inspector of the Investigation Unit for the Schenectady County Sheriff's Department. Jeff was beloved and respected in the law enforcement world, his wealth of knowledge was second to none and widely sought after and freely given.
Jeff was a licensed pilot, licensed E.M.T., and held a lifetime New York State Fishing License. He was passionate about powerlifting (winning multiple medals in the 1987 Police Olympics), fishing (especially fly fishing for brook trout), and American history (especially the Civil War having served as a board member on the Capital District Civil War Round Table). Jeff also loved watching hockey, football, and horse racing, and was known by friends as the "master of the turf."
He is survived by his wife, Barbara (Finke) Sauter; his two amazing sons whom he was immensely proud of, Karl James Sauter and Glen Foster Sauter II; his mother, Eleanor Sauter; his sister, Laurie Sauter; as well as cherished friends and his extended family.
The funeral service will be on Monday at 1 p.m. in the Daly Funeral Home, 242 McClellan St., Schenectady. Calling hours will precede the service from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow the service in the East Greenbush Cemetery.

Always enjoyed working with Jeff on the Menands Police Department. You could always count on him to be there for you, plus it helped that size was intimidating and a deterrent.

An unspeakable loss...
The news of Jeff´s unexpected passing has me in a puddle. Like legions of others, he was a key person in my life.
Jeff was larger than life in every sense. All he had to do was walk in a room and there was a palpable shift in energy. He was irresistible and brought all good things - sanity, knowledge, intelligence, common sense, wisdom, humor and a willing heart. He always showed up-always. He always made everything better-always.
Jeff loved hard - he was all in. His career, being a cop, his country, nature, his friends, power lifting - the list is long.
To his family - Barb, Karl, Glen, mother and sister - he loved you most of all.
I know he has reunited with his Dad. He will rest in peace for a bit but in no time, he´ll be busy taking care of those he left behind. He is likely to have a new assignment - training new Angel recruits or working on the presidential election.
I will miss his wisdom, sage guidance, and his humor. For me, life will never be the same. Thanks Jeff, best buddy ever - I´ll never forget.

I am so sorry to hear this news. I remember many gatherings on first st. in Troy and couldn't help but notice just how tall Jeff was. And I also remember seeing him at Aunt Eleanor and Glenns and swimming in that beautiful pool and watching the big gold fish set next to their driveway. Too many years have passed, but it doesn't mean that you're forgotten. I love you all and will be praying for your comfort during this time. God bless.

Jeff Sauter was one of the BEST law enforcement officer that existed. He was a tremendous person full of love and kindness and dedication to family and friends. I am devastated to hear this news. We lost touch with one another but that´s all on me! Another life lesson thinking we all have time to reconnect and re establish what was! This man deserves every bit of respect and admiration. I am so sorry for his family. Jeff was a rock!

How to describe Jeff in only a few words...not
On the exterior Jeff is a tall, strong man who carries himself so you give him nothing but respect.
But when you get to know Jeff personally the inside is so different. He is loving and caring, thoughtful and giving. Jeff could make you laugh, charm you as well as cook a gourmet meal for you. Jeff could take you out in the wilderness and be sure you return safe. Jeff is well-rounded and knowledgeable about many things he cares about. First, obviously his family from Barb, Karl and Glen, to his Mom and sister Laurie as well as so many others he considered as family, blood or not. Jeff wasn't afraid to dream big and work hard to see them through. His work was also part of his family as you can imagine. His stories and experiences could keep you sitting for hours at a time. Could go on and on but will say my favorite part of Jeff were his hugs. He towered over you and engulfed you in his arms but you felt his heart. Nothing but Love and respect for the man who married my college roommate and friend, the man who became my friend as well and father to two of my favorite young men. Love you Jeff
