I am sorry to say that I just learned of the passing of Louie Rappaport today, over half a year since he left us. Louie and I were fast friends in PS 23 elementary school in Rochester. We share a love of current events, endured years of rote memorization in Hebrew school, and remained in intermittent communication since I left Rochester for the west coast with my parents in l958.
In recent years I often inquired about his health but he always said "you don't want to know". Our early interest in international affairs such as the Cuban Revolution of
the late l950's, our attendance at Temple B'rith Kodesh Sunday school, and our
afternoon bike rides led both of us to careers related to our interests in the wider world. Louie made a significant contribution to journalism. I have spent my professional life as a cultural anthropologist working with minority peoples in Southeast Asia.
During our school days Louie was always known as "Louie the Hippo". Always a large kid, Louie could not be pushed around or intimidated by anyone. He could stand his ground. During my youth, Louie was far and away my best friend. Maybe we were always last to be chosen for baseball teams. Our strong suit was not athletics. But when it came to books, newspaper or Jewish issues---we are on top of it all the time.
Louie will be greatly missed. My belated condolences.
