Marion C. Smith

Smith, Marion C. ALBANY Marion C. Smith, 91, died on Tuesday, August 12, 2014 at Our Lady of Mercy Life Center. Born in Catskill, she was the daughter of the late Nathaniel and Agatha Delanoy Smith. She was a graduate of St. Rose College and received her master's degree in education from Siena College. Ms. Smith was a former member of the Sisters of Mercy for 37 years. She was most proud of her role as a teacher during her years in the Order. After her departure from the convent, she worked in Philadelphia in various capacities, most notably as administrative assistant to the Mayor's Commission on Services to the Aging. She moved to Oneonta, where she served as administrator principal of St. Mary's Elementary School and director of the Oneonta Newman Foundation. She was a member of numerous professional organizations and very active in community affairs. Ms. Smith was an amateur jazz drummer, passionate about her music, who had the opportunity to fill-in with the Lionel Hampton Band. She was an avid reader and writer, who wrote and crafted two books for children. She was the sister of the late Robert N. Smith Sr. (Ethel Smith Noe); aunt of Mark (Perley), Daniel (late Georgeann), Barbara Jean, and Robert N. Smith Jr. (Susan). She is also survived by several grandnieces and nephews. Her family would like to express gratitude to the staff of the McCauley Residence and Our Lady of Mercy Life Center, the Little Sisters of the Poor and the Sisters of Mercy for the care and support during her extraordinary life. All are invited to attend a memorial Mass to be celebrated at Blessed Sacrament Church, Albany, on Thursday, August 21, 2014 at 10:30 a.m.
