Mary Newell Obituary

Newell, Mary Ann
ALBANY - Mary Ann Newell passed away peacefully on December 21, 2024, at her Albany home. Mary Ann was born in Schenectady, on March 12, 1949, and was the daughter of the late Mary and Elwood Reber. Mary Ann is survived by her soulmate and loving husband of 40 years, Edward F. Newell, III, of Albany. She is the mother of four sons, Ian Herrick, Eddie, Dan and Kyle (Katie) Newell, all of Albany; and she is the grandmother of Norah and Ellie Newell. Mary Ann was predeceased by her sister, Gayle Nethaway; and is survived by her siblings, Joel (Sandy) Reber, Kathleen Wester and Karen Gniewek Conklin (Clifford). She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Mary Ann worked at NYS Tax and Finance as an audit clerk until 1985, when she left that position and dedicated her time to raising her family. She also worked at Albany City School District until 2004.
Mary Ann was a great lover of animals, especially horses, and enjoyed riding her own horse, Dr. Pepper. She enjoyed sewing and making Halloween costumes for her children. Mary Ann had a great interest in science, botany, and assisted her children with their award-winning science fair projects. Anyone who knew Mary Ann noted that she was a kind, loving person who never judged anyone. Surrounded by men in her household, Mary Ann joked that she "got along with men better than women… and her animals were easier than people." She enjoyed music and attended the 1969 Woodstock festival. Mary Ann and Ed looked forward to their weekly rides exploring the area and singing to her favorite songs.
The Newell family would like to thank the staff at NYOH, AMCH blood disorder unit and Community Hospice for their care and attention to Mary Ann. The family would like to express special thanks to our physician, Dr. Nagaraja Patil, for his attentive care for Mary Ann.
Services will be held privately.

So terribly sorry for your loss. Mary Ann was such a light that shined on everyone she was around. She had the power to make you laugh, smile and feel loved at every turn. Though she did not have daughters we all thought of her as a second mom and the daughters she never had. Her memory lives on in so many people. Love to you all.
