Richard Weiner Obituary

Weiner, Dr. Richard ALBANY Dr. Richard Weiner, age 81, of Homestead Avenue in Albany, died Sunday morning, January 14, 2007 at the Albany Memorial Hospital. He was born in Detroit, Mich. and was a graduate of Siena College where he received his B.A. and master's degrees. He was also a graduate of St. John's University where he received his doctorate degree in education. Dr. Weiner was a former English and social studies teacher at Ravena Coeymans High School and Troy High School from 1954 to 1959. He was later employed as a guidance counselor in the Lindenhurst Long Island High School from 1959 to 1965. After earning his doctorate degree in Education from St. John's University, he returned to Albany in 1965. He was employed in the guidance department of the NY Education Department in 1965. He was promoted to director of school supervision and accountability, retiring in 1992. Dr. Weiner continued his educational career as an independent educational consultant until the present. He was a teacher and principal of the religious school of Congregation Beth Emeth. Dr. Weiner's interests were varied. In the 1940s, he was an actor with the Albany Civic Theater and played the lead role in Home of the Brave. While attending Siena College he was the editor in chief of Siena's Beverwyck Magazine. He had been co-vice president of the Cotillion Ballroom Dance Club. He was an Army veteran and served as a first lieutenant during World War II. He was a member of the Jewish War Veterans Post # 105 in Albany and was also a member of the Colonie Elks Lodge as well as Phi Delta Kappa. He gave voluntary educational services to Albany High School from 1998 to the present. He is survived by his loving wife, Alma Gordon Weiner and his son, William Weiner of Los Angeles, Calif. as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Carl Weiner and his two sisters, Evelyn Goldstein and Lillian O'Donnell. Services at the Levine Memorial Chapel, 649 Washington Avenue, Albany on Thursday January 18, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow in the Beth Emeth Cemetery Loudonville. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be to International Waldenstrom's Mac-roglobulinemia Foundation, 3937 D Swift Road, Sarasota, FL 34231 or the American Cancer Society, 260 Osborne Road, Albany, NY 12211.
