Robert Hume Obituary

Hume, Robert Jr. FARMINGTON, N.M. Dr. Robert Davidson Hume Jr., 89, longtime Farmington physician, was reunited with his wife, Joan, on Tuesday, March 29, 2011. He passed away at Select Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colo., following a short illness. He was born February 13, 1922, in Cohoes, N.Y., to Robert and Dora Bordeaux Hume. Dr. Hume, known as "Bob," attended St. Agnes Grade School and Cohoes High School. In 1944, he graduated from Siena College in Albany, N.Y., with a bachelor of science degree. He studied medicine at Marquette University. Upon graduation in 1945, his entire medical class was inducted into the army. He was allowed to finish his internship at Sister of Charity Hospital in Buffalo, N.Y., where he met Joan, the nurse he would marry. In 1948, Bob was busy with shipping people to and from Europe as a military ship's doctor. In I950, he entered the Korean War as a regimental surgeon in the 187th Airborne. He was part of a MASH unit and made two combat jumps behind enemy lines for which he was awarded the Bronze Star. He returned to the States in 1952, and did his residency practice at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Denver. In 1954, he became the chief of obstetrics, gynecology and general surgery at the army base of Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Md. He would serve in the Army until 1957, when he resigned and was discharged with the rank of lieutenant colonel. In 1957, Bob set up an OB/GYN practice in Farmington, with his army buddy, Dr. Jack Ritzenthaler. He maintained this practice until his retirement in 1984. Over the course of his medical career in Farmington, he assisted in the delivery of more than 6,000 babies. Inducted into the Hall of Fame at San Juan Medical Center in 2008, his commendation reads, "Dr. Hume was on-call every other night and every other weekend for 27 years." His kind and generous spirit will remain with those he served so faithfully. Bob was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Dora, and his beloved wife, Joan. Bob is survived by his seven children, daughters, Ann and husband Bill Freimuth of Farmington, Kathy and husband Tim Howard of Pueblo, Colo., Nancy and husband Tim Jones of Albuquerque, Janet and husband John Mullen of Gloucester, Mass., Amy and husband Kevin Riehl of Espanola , N.M., and Carol and husband Mike Dickerson of Aztec, N.M.; son Bobby and wife Beverly Hume of Farmington; 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Dr. Hume was my OB in 1964-1965. He saved my life, along with Dr Kendall. My appendix ruptured when I was 8 mo pregnant. I was 19. My grandmother babysat for him & she called him. He told her to bring me to the hospital & he said it was a close call. When I went into labor a month later, he was out of town, so Dr Ritzenthaler delivered my daughter, Yvette. Loved him! He was a very nice man. Loved Dr Ritzenthaler too.

To the family: Dr. Hume was my Mom's doctor (Joy Hadden, RIP 3/23/2008). He delivered 4 of her 6 babies. He was so important in her life, that even I still know his name. Baby #1 Jill Hadden Helms.

God Bless Dr. Hume & Family. Not only did he deliver my 2nd son, but I was his "one in a million" patient. Thinking that I was in labor (7 days past my due date), I actually was having an appendicitis attack. He saved both mine & my son's lives. I was blessed to have him as my doctor.

Dear Ann and Bill,
I am so sorry to hear about Dr. Hume's passing. He was one of my doctors when I delivered my daughter in 1981. Whenever a good man goes, the community suffers a loss. The journey of loss is not easy, but is necessary. The good thing is that he is with the Lord, and you can go to him.
May the Lord comfort abd strengthen you and your family in the days ahead. May you rest in Him, knowing that your loved one is in the Master's hand.
You are in my prayers.

I had no idea that Dr. Hume had led such an interesting and illustrious life. Until I read his obituary, all I knew was that he had touched my life and those of my family which would have been enough for me. One of those 6000 plus babies was my son, “Fono aka "Joe" Walters. Thank you, Dr. Hume for that…and for letting me be in the delivery room without attending classes…and for letting me hang out with Trish that night until the hospital threw me out…and….uh….for suggesting the extra stitches.

Ann, Your Dad was so sweet to be around...too bad there aren't more like him. He delivered my first son only to tell my Dad that he "finally got you that boy" (my Dad's first grandson). So special that he remembered my parents and was able to deliver 2 generations. Our prayers are with you. Love, Joy Wheeler, Sharmon Wheeler and family

Thank you for sharing your Dad with so many people. He was a most special person to me during a couple of very difficult times. It was like he had nothing to do but care for me. The way your Dad practiced medicine was an art. He will always be special to me. Rest in peace my friend.

It was a pleasure to work with Dr. Hume while he was at CRI. He always wanted to come to therapy and work and it was great to see him go from unable to stand, to standing and then using a walker. He made my job enjoyable. He was a great humble man. Michelle J. Storm,OTR/L

Dr. Hume was not only my Ob for my first child Chris, but his daughter Ann and I have been friends for 35 years. Ann showed up May 21st, 1977 to take me and my husband Scott to the Trough for dinner, but when I mentioned I was having "pains" every 5 minutes or so Ann yelled "Have you called my dad??!!" Needless to say, she made me go to the hospital where Chris was born a few hours later. Unfortunately, he not only picked the night the most babies were born at Farmington Hospital, he also picked the night Dr. Hume was off!! Over the years I forgave Dr. Hume, partied with Ann,then Bill, and now live in the Bay Area. We were just with Ann and Bill this July partying as usual. Lots of love to all the family, and thanks, Dr. Hume, for having Ann,(she's been a good friend over the years) and almost delivering Chris! We know you will be missed by all who knew you.

Our condolences to the Hume family, and a special note to Ann. Our son Jay was one of the 6000 babies Dr. Hume delivered when Joe and I both taught and coached at Farmington High. When Jay was born, Dr. Hume said, "Coach, you've got a boy." He was a dear person to whom many owe a big thanks.
