Besides my father Eugene, Sister Nunciata at St. Colman's Orphanage, Father Doyle at Cardinal McCloskey and Sue Faerman at Rockefeller College, Mr Staats was most instrumental in my educational success. He willed all of his students to succeed and deeply cared about all of us. His Accounting classes were epic experiences - he made dry material pieces of gold with the humor and wit he was famous for. He was one of a kind. I count my blessing everyday for having known him. Thank you Mr. Staats.

Bill was a wonderful community contributor--whether teaching or guiding visitors around his family home or offering info on First Church or on Rensselaer; his cheerful waves from his Model A Ford roadster will be missed. On behalf of the City of Rensselaer Historical Society we offer our condolences to the Staats family.

Mr. Staats will always be remembered as one of the finest teachers I ever encountered. I graduated from HVCC in 1977 and I am sure classmates from that time will attest to his ability to relate to the various students he had and where they were in their lives. He strived to make his students do well and took a lot of satisfaction in the end results. I will never forget the bus trip to see the Yankees in the spring of 1977. Mr. Staats was a chaperone on that trip and I believe he had more fun than the students on the trip. Nuff said!! Rest in peace old friend!

Goodbye to a truly great man, teacher, mentor. A few years back I spotted Mr. Staats leaving a local restaurant and proceeded to tell my wife about what a profound impact he had on my life and how I wished I could thank him. With some nudging from her, I caught him in the parking lot and got that chance. I don't know exactly what he saw in me, but he had enough faith in me to petition the dean to allow me to take 22 credit hours during the spring semester in 1975 so I could graduate on time. This was after failing two courses and limping in with a 1.8 average the previous semester. I managed to finish the 7 courses with a 3.18. Later that summer he would again go to bat for me, finding a college that would take me for the fall semester roughly 3 weeks before its start. There I would go on to meet my wife of now 40 years. Who knew that a couple of acts of kindness would go on to change the direction of my life forever. Thanks again Mr. Staats.

I came in contact with Mr. Staats in 1970 at HVCC and he was my accounting teacher and advisor. He reviewed all my credits from different colleges in the area and said this is what you need in order to graduate HVCC. He signed his name on the list of courses I needed in order to graduate and stated "if I'm dead just show the college this list". I was a night student and over a few years I followed the list and graduated. Later received a BA from St. Rose College. Years later, I ran into Mr. Staats and had a chance to personally thank him for looking after me and giving me direction that changed my life. This great wonderful man will be missed. Thanks again Mr. Staats for helping me and many others.

To the entire Staats Family
I had the honor to have Mr Staats at HVCC. He was an amazing man and an exceptional teacher. I loved his class and him as a man. I saw him one day and had to go up to him to thank him for making my time at HVCC an enjoyable. I loved seeing him drive down I 90 in his model T car with his cap on, he was enjoying life. Treasure your memories with him and we should thank God that he was with us for a while.

To the Staats family,
We have very fond memories of Bill and are hoping your memories get you through this difficult time. The Bradt / Smolinski families spent many fun days down at Staats' island. The excursions were usually led by Bill, who always had a twinkle in his eye and was such a gracious host.
He always had such great stories and was an expert storyteller. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. May Bill rest in peace.
