BILLIE RAWLS Obituary

RAWLS Billie Scheel Rawls passed away peacefully in the morning hours of August 3, 2012 surrounded by her loving family. Just two days removed from her 82nd birthday. Mom leaves a legacy of enduring love, a sharp wit, and a southern grace that all who knew her will deeply miss. Billie was born in Tampa, Florida on Wednesday, July 31, 1930 to William and Bernice Scheel. Mom was always proud of her German heritage and was able to journey to the old country to explore her roots and look up lost family. She was the youngest sibling of her treasured family and with her passing; she has been reunited with Curt, Dudie, and Mabel. She moved to her beloved Ortega as a child and often reminisced about the trolley that ran up Baltic Avenue, the dance hall over the water next to the old Ortega Bridge, and her days at Ortega Elementary. Billie attended Robert E. Lee High School. She enjoyed telling us about being courted by all the boys, finally succumbing to the charms of one Jimmie Rawls who attended Andrew Jackson High School of all places. After several stops, including Gainesville, St. Pete, and Jasper, Billie finally moved to Perry in 1964 where she became active in her community. She served as President of the Perry Garden Club. Mom later presided as President of the Alpha Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi where she was recognized for her service by being awarded the prestigious Woman of the Year Award. After relocating back to Jacksonville in 1971, Billie became active in Parents Without Partners, ultimately serving as President for several years. Again, Mom was recognized for her service, being honored with The Parent of the Year Award. Mom then reentered the work place finally arriving at Shands Hospital where she retired from the Department of Radiology in the early 90's. Billie was an accomplished Medical Transcriptionist and could type faster than well she typed really fast. I saw her do it. Though challenged throughout her life with chronic asthma, Mom never let it get the better of her and will be remembered by all who knew her as a woman who was always quick with a smile and a kind word. Mom is survived by her adoring children, Cindy Worsham (Dan), Jim Rawls (Bobbie), Bill Rawls, and Curt Rawls (Rebecca) as well as at least 9 grandchildren. She also leaves behind her lifelong friend Patsy Odom as well as her dear friends Karen Simpson and Nancy Drury. The family would also like to extend their thanks to Mom's favorite niece and her husband, Laura (nee Shrewsbury) and Gary Smith, for their kindness and devotion to Aunt Billie. Please join in a celebration of Mom's time spent with us at Hardage-Giddens Town & Country Funeral Home, 7242 Normandy Blvd., Jacksonville, FL 32205 with visitation on Thursday, August 9, 2012 from 6:00-8:00 pm with the funeral services being held at 10:00 am Friday, August 10, 2012. Interment to follow funeral services at Riverside Memorial Park. And yes Mom, we will continue to feed the cat. Please Sign the Guestbook @ Jacksonville.com

Billie and I were co-workers at Shands. Her wit and humor brought us lots of laughter and made it a joy to come to the office. With our common interests in reading and traveling, and our love for cats, it was easy for us to become friends. I will miss Billie, but I am comforted by my many memories of her, all of which make me smile.

My sincere sympathy to the Rawls family in losing dear Billie. It was my job to train Billie in radiology and listen to the words which were foreign to her. Billie learned quickly and we laughed together when she would say "Oh, that is what he was saying". She always had everyone's admiration. She came as a temporary and when there was a position available, I jumped at the chance to ask her if she would consider joining us full time. We worked and laughed together for many years. She was a joy to work with. Three or four of us would meet after we all left Shands for lunch at least once a year to catch up on old times. She was a true friend who cared about her friends and you knew she cared. My only regret is that I did not call her often enough just to say hello. Dear Billie, you will be missed. Cindy and brothers, your mom was so very proud of all of you. I have four children also so we often spoke of our children. I know Jesus has another angel in heaven now and I will be glad to see her again one day.

You could not take yourself too seriously with Billie around. That was good for me, I took everything too seriously! Then, when we, the old Todd, Brown, and Dyer Orthopedic group, started laughing, we could not stop. Billie could get us laughing and relieve the tensions of the day. Oh, and that dry wit of hers! I am privileged to have known her and will never, ever forget her. There was a little mischievous twinkle in her eyes from time to time.
Billie, I am so glad we saw each other in July. I am glad to have been a small part of your rich, and full life.

We Luv u Billie
We will always charish the memories of all the fun we had growing up. All of us piling in the station wagon every week in the summer. Going to the movies with bottle caps and the delicious sandwiches that were made. We will see u again soon. Luv, Loa and all the kids;)

My Mom and Billie were cousins. They use to load all of us children into the back of Billes green station wagon(the one with the woods panels on the sides)and carry us to the beach every summer. Billie also knew how to decorate a Christmas Tree. It's a wonder it didn't tip over with all the decorations and tinsle she used! I loved to hear Billie's laugh. She brought a smile to everyone's face.

I am so glad to have known Billie through her neice, Laura. She was always smiling and laughing. I know that she loved spending time with Laura and Gary and I know they will miss her terribly. It is a blessing to know that she is not in pain anymore and that we will all see her again in Heaven, where she is in God's loving arms.

I met Billie prior to my birth. Though I do not have a keen recollection of the early years, I relish the times our families were able to get together, the occasions she opened her home for my parents and me and our all-encompassing phone conversations. Billie was a true friend to my mother and provided unmeasurable support to my sisters and me through our mom's illness and subsequent passing. I feel blessed to have Billie and the entire Rawls family in my life. There is nothing like having an "extra" mom when you need one!

Billie started out being my favorite aunt, as a child. Over the years, she became one of my most beloved friends, and my "other mother" after my mom passed away. We loved to travel together, talk about old family stories, swap books, go out to dinner, laugh, solve the world's problems and just share our lives. Billie never had an unkind word to say about anyone, even those who had wronged her. She was so knowledgeable about so many subjects (she read everything), so conversations with her were a treat. I feel like Billie was a little extra "bonus" from God. She was always a bright spot in my day and I enjoyed every single minute I spent with her over the last 50+ years. I will miss her so much--her smile, her laughter, her twinkly eyes and her constant friendship. I can smile knowing she is in Heaven taking deep breaths and visiting with all the relatives. I will never forget all the great things this extraordinary aunt and friend gave to me.

I met Billie in 1981 when I started a new job with Drs Todd, Brown and Dyer. Little did I know this meeting would turn into a 30 yr friendship. Billie was very easy to like, She was always upbeat and could only see the good in people. She never met a stranger. Over the years she became like a sister to me, someone I could confide in and she always knew what to say in any situation. Billie was a very learned person. There wasn't any topic that she couldn't talk about (at least voice her opinion). One of her passions was reading. She always had two or three books going at one time. We had such good times together going to parties, taking trips (visiting her family or mine),spending holidays together. I am going to miss our daily phone calls (about 6:00pm) and a day doesn't go by that I won't miss her. I feel most fortunate to have had the honor and pleasure of knowing Billie (William to me). I know she is in a better place and I know she is still happy. Love, Karen
