George Bruton Obituary

BRUTON George Bruton Jr. died Thursday, November 3, 2016. He was born August 1, 1926 in Jacksonville, Florida to Lula Wormack Bruton and George W. Bruton Sr. He was the seventh of their nine children and was preceded in death by seven siblings: Robert Sr., Willie, Mozelle, James, Wilbert, Bismark, and Leola Stroughter. A surviving sibling, Bertram A. (Dorothy) Bruton resides in Denver, Colorado. Funeral services will be held Friday, November 11, 2016 at 11:00 a.m., New Bethel AME Church, 1231 Tyler St., Jacksonville, Florida. A wake from 5 to 7 p.m. followed by a Kappa Alpha Psi memorial service from 7 to 7:30 p.m. occurs Thursday, November 10, 2016 at Lampkins-Patterson Funeral Home, 6615 Arlington Expressway. After spending some of his early years between Newberry, Fl and Bamberg, SC, Mr. Bruton graduated from Old Stanton High School in Jacksonville, FL in 1944. Having completed a two-year stint in the U.S. Army, he entered Florida A & M University in September 1947 and earned his undergraduate degree in 1951 in Industrial Arts. Having completed the reserved officers training course (ROTC), he was commissioned a 2nd Lt. He, also, became a proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. Over thirty years, Mr. Bruton taught vocational education courses such as graphic arts, metals, woodwork and tailoring in the Broward County and Duval County public school systems. He became involved in professional concerns such as school integration, salary negotiations and teacher equity. He was an avid traveler, jazz aficionado and collector of cameras and photographs; often being sought out for his services as a skilled photographer and printer. He married Queen Hargrett Bruton in 1955. They had 4 children: Angela V. Bruton, Sharon Y. (David, now deceased) Bruton Glover, George E. (Merline) Bruton, III and Colleen C. Bruton. This consummate Rattler, husband, father, son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin and friend is also survived by: children -Rosemary Smiley, Victor McNair, and Michelle Tramel; nieces - Michelle Bruton Brown, Rosemary Bruton, Jeanette Stroughter Hall, Sabra Hernandez; and nephews - James L. (Abigail) Bruton Jr., Acie Stroughter III(Sandra), Bertram Stroughter, Reginald Stroughter, Ronald (Calromea) Stroughter. He will be mourned by many other relatives and friends, and his true friend to the end, WillieBubba Jones.
