John Meek Obituary

MEEK John Hunter Meek, Jr., 90, died at his Macclenny home on November 10, after an extended illness and long, rewarding life. A lifelong North Florida resident, Hunter was born in Callahan, Florida, on October 29, 1926, moved to Jacksonville, Florida, in 1933, graduated from Landon High School in 1944 and received his bachelor's degree from the University of Florida in 1949. In between high school and college, he participated in a program that resulted in his being commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army, where he served as an aide to a general in Italy. Upon his college graduation, he became a Certified Public Accountant, working first for a local accounting firm and then co-founding Meek & McLeod (then known as Tyson & Meek), the Jacksonville-based CPA firm he helped lead for nearly 60 years. A private pilot who once owned his own plane, Hunter was also an avid Gator fan, enthusiastic seine fisherman and friend to many. But most important of all, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. Preceded in death by his father, John Hunter Meek, his mother, Mabel Meek, his daughter, Kathryn Ann Meek, and his stepson, Russell McNeil, he is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Betty Starling Meek; sons John H Meek, III, and George Meek; stepsons Michael (Lori) McNeil and David (Sheila) McNeil; grandsons Matt Meek, Joe Meek and Sean Meek; siblings, Emory (Carol) Meek and Frances (John) Smith; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. He was truly well-loved and will be sorely missed. A memorial service will be held in his honor on Monday, November 14, 2016 at 11:30 am at Macclenny Primitive Baptist Church, 94 North Boulevard East, Macclenny, Florida with Elder David Crawford officiating. The arrangements are under the care and direction of V. TODD FERREIRA FUNERAL SERVICES, 250 North Lowder Street, Macclenny, FL 32063 (904)259-5700. To Hunter's family,

My husband, Stanley and I have many fond memories of the Meek family. Stanley and Hunter were childhood friends which continued throughout their adult life. We also were in each other's weddings. May God bless you and surround you with His love and give you peace.
