Nicholas Anthony Debs

Nicholas Debs Obituary

DEBS Nicholas Anthony Debs, 82, passed away Wednesday, March 16, 2011. Born in Jacksonville on October 25, 1928, Nick was the fourth child of Nicolas and Rosa Debs, immigrants from Lebanon. Nick attended Immaculate Conception School where he excelled in both the classroom and on the athletic fields in the sports of swimming, basketball and football. He attended the University of Florida and was a member of the Gator basketball team his freshman year in 1948. Late in 1948, he left the University when his father became ill and took over Debs Store, a family grocery store begun by his father in 1921. He was a volunteer lifeguard in the Life Saving Corps at Jacksonville Beach, a member of the Knights of Columbus and served in the Florida National Guard. Nick ran Debs Store working six days a week for 62 years until illness forced his retirement at the beginning of 2011. For over 50 years, his brother, Eugene, served as both his business partner and best friend. Their devotion to Jacksonville's Eastside community was featured on the front page of the Florida Times-Union on Labor Day, 2006, one month before Eugene passed away. Nick was a founding member of Christ the King Catholic Church. He served in virtually every lay position for the Church for over 50 years and was a Sacristan and Eucharistic Minister at the time of his death. The real love of Nick's life was his family, beginning with his wife of over 56 years, Julia. He married Julia Murphy on June 12, 1954 and always spoke of his love for her and of her beauty. Nick and Julia were blessed with eight children: Joe (Paulette) Debs, Ann Marie (Neil) Wein, Denise (Ed) Cox, Nancy (Rick) Buchanan, Diane (Todd) Ierna, David Debs, Patricia (Seth) Abbott and Tom Debs. He also had eight grandchildren: Jenna, Tiffany, Kelsey, Clayton, Marissa, Nicholas, Samantha and Brooke. He also leaves behind 3 sisters, Sylvia Debs Fowler (Johnny), Mae Debs and Nellie Debs and is predeceased by his brother, Eugene Vincent Debs. He loved his nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews as his own children and grandchildren. In fact, his 'family' extended to literally hundreds of his friends and his children's friends. Sunday dinners with Nick were legendary! A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:00 AM Monday, March 21, 2011 at Christ the King Catholic Church, with Father Thanh Nguyen as Celebrant. A Vigil Service will be held at 7:00 PM Sunday, March 20, also at Christ the King Catholic Church with Monsignor Mortimer Danaher leading the Rosary. Interment will follow the Funeral Mass at St Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Christ the King Catholic School/Scholarships or Community Hospice of NE Florida. Arrangements by Corey Kerlin Funeral Home, 940 Cesery Blvd.

I am sure many can say this, but in the short time I knew Mr. Debs, he became a role model to me. I have certainly never met a finer example of a Christian man, his brother not withstanding. I wish I could have known Gene as well. May God continue to bless the Debs' family.

Debs & Fowler families

April 7, 2011

On behalf of the Debs and Fowler families, we would like to thank our friends and colleagues for the countless beautiful expressions of love during this time. Nick was a wonderful man and we are all grieving over our loss. He loved everyone as his own and always had a kind word to say about each person he knew. His exemplary humble life is a lesson in faith, love, and service. Words cannot adequately describe how grateful we are to have received such expressions of sympathy from so many people. Thank you again.

We will love you always. You live in our hearts.

Dear Debs family,

When I was a little girl, I lived about three houses from the store. We went to the store just about every day for something. Mr.Gene and Mr. Nick were so kind and helpful. They allowed my mom to obtain food on credit since we could not afford it. We were hungry and they fed us. They never turned us away. As I give my testimony in life, I am reminded of the acts of kindness that was protrayed through them. I had the chance to visit with them since I have become an adult, and it was like I had never left. Mr.Gene and Mr. Nick loved all people. My mom called me today with the news, and we are planning on going by the store to say our good-byes. Thank you for sharing your loves ones with us throughout the years. My family will never forget them..

To Deb's Family:

I am truly saddened to learn of Mr Nick's passing today. I just walked by the store and noticed the sign on the door. I was shocked when I read the notice on the door. I was by the store this weekend and did not see the notice regarding his services.

The Deb's family store had been in the Eastside community for a very long time. Mr Nick and Mr Gene both supported many community fundraising events. I am sure they will truly be missed by residents of the Eastside community.

This condolence is being written
"remembering how Mr Nick touched the lifes of so many others."

My deepest sympathy.

My deepest sympathy to the Deb's Family.

Sharing Your Sorrow
Words can't make your sorrow any easier, but they can show how deeply others care. Although I did not live in the neighborhood of Debs Grocery, once I met Gene and Nick I found myself returning to chat and take notes as I was writing a book that included history of long-time entrepreneurs and their businesses on and near Old Florida Avenue. It was a delight to talk to these brothers and observe the patient and caring way they treated their customers. Then there was the shop that facinated me with a glance of yesteryear; the old walk-end freezer for meat and their book keeping method of storing receipts in cigar boxes, with each year neatly written on each box. I will pass the store with the large sign"DEBS" and will remember always my friends, Gene and Nick.

What a wonderful legacy of love and service to his family and community he leaves behind. As an associate pastor at Christ the King from 1982-84, I remember very well his kindness to me and the members of the parish. He always had a smile on his face. He will long be remembered, I am blessed to have known him and his family. Requiescat in pace! God bless you all!
