I am sure many can say this, but in the short time I knew Mr. Debs, he became a role model to me. I have certainly never met a finer example of a Christian man, his brother not withstanding. I wish I could have known Gene as well. May God continue to bless the Debs' family.

On behalf of the Debs and Fowler families, we would like to thank our friends and colleagues for the countless beautiful expressions of love during this time. Nick was a wonderful man and we are all grieving over our loss. He loved everyone as his own and always had a kind word to say about each person he knew. His exemplary humble life is a lesson in faith, love, and service. Words cannot adequately describe how grateful we are to have received such expressions of sympathy from so many people. Thank you again.
We will love you always. You live in our hearts.

Dear Debs family,
When I was a little girl, I lived about three houses from the store. We went to the store just about every day for something. Mr.Gene and Mr. Nick were so kind and helpful. They allowed my mom to obtain food on credit since we could not afford it. We were hungry and they fed us. They never turned us away. As I give my testimony in life, I am reminded of the acts of kindness that was protrayed through them. I had the chance to visit with them since I have become an adult, and it was like I had never left. Mr.Gene and Mr. Nick loved all people. My mom called me today with the news, and we are planning on going by the store to say our good-byes. Thank you for sharing your loves ones with us throughout the years. My family will never forget them..

To Deb's Family:
I am truly saddened to learn of Mr Nick's passing today. I just walked by the store and noticed the sign on the door. I was shocked when I read the notice on the door. I was by the store this weekend and did not see the notice regarding his services.
The Deb's family store had been in the Eastside community for a very long time. Mr Nick and Mr Gene both supported many community fundraising events. I am sure they will truly be missed by residents of the Eastside community.

Aunt Julia, I so wish I could have been there for Uncle Nick's funeral. I have such fond memories; he was such a kind, cheerful and wonderful man. I cannot even remember him without a smile on his face and the cheeriest of greetings. I hope you will be sustained by all the wonderful memories you have. To The Debs Family. I was a litle boy when my grandparents and aunt and my father owned a store across the street from you all. My jiddo and sitto were always talking about you all as well as my aunt rose and my dad joesph would always talk about you all as well as my other uncle George joesph who had a store across from you all as well. To all the Debs Family, I pray that God will provide comfort during this sad time. Your husband/dad was the best. He was such a gentle and caring man. Mr. and Mrs. Debs hold a special place in my heart as my Godparents. The Jones family has a long relationship with the Debs family with both of our fathers being boyhood friends.

Sharing Your Sorrow
Words can't make your sorrow any easier,but they can show how deeply others care. Although I did not live in the neighborhood of Debs Grocery, once I met Gene and Nick I found myself returning to chat and take notes as I was writing a book that included history of long-time entrepreneurs and their businesses on and near Old Florida Avenue. It was a delight to talk to these brothers and observe the patient and caring way they treated their customers. Then there was the shop that facinated me with a glance of yesteryear; the old walk-end freezer for meat and their book keeping method of storing receipts in cigar boxes, with each year neatly written on each box. I will pass the store with the large sign"DEBS" and will remember always my friends, Gene and Nick.

To Julia and the Debs Family:
What a wonderful legacy of love and service to his family and community he leaves behind. As an associate pastor at Christ the King from 1982-84, I remember very well his kindness to me and the members of the parish. He always had a smile on his face. Mr. Debs was an Inspiration as a Father, neighbor and active Member at Church. He always treated everyone as if his own. His Home was always full with his 1st Family/Kids--but when you arrived and stayed to eat--you felt like you were supposed to be there all along. Love to Mrs. Debs, the Kids & Family.

I am saddened to hear the passing of Nick. He and his wife, Julia were close friends of my parents, George and MaryLouise Cratem. I also taught his son David at Bishop Kenny.
