Ted Lynn "Coach" Paris

Ted Paris Obituary

Ted Paris, a "legend" in Vernon Parish education, lost a courageous two-and-a-half year battle with pancreatic cancer on  Saturday, December 25, 2010 at home surrounded by his loving family.
Ted (Coach) Paris was born on March 22, 1934 to C.E. (Buddy) and Anne Sibley Paris in Leesville. He graduated from Leesville High School where he excelled in academics and sports. His success in football earned him an athletic scholarship to LSU in 1952. He was the first all-state football player from LHS and the first to ever play college football. Ted was a starting linebacker and center for the Tigers for four years, playing both offense and defense with an average of 57 minutes per game. He earned a B.S. degree from LSU, an M.Ed. from Northwestern State University, and an Educational Specialist from LSU.
He returned to Leesville after earning his Bachelor's degree to teach mathematics and coach. During his 32 years as an educator in Vernon Parish, Coach Paris served as head coach/athletic director at LHS leading his beloved Wampus Cats to their first district title in 1963. Ted was named district Coach of the Year.  He served in several administrative positions during his career in education. He was principal of Leesville High School, director of the Vernon Career Center and, finally principal of East Leesville Elementary School where he served for many years before retiring in 1988. During the time he was an administrator, he also taught mathematics in the adult education department of Vernon Parish and to the military personnel in the U.S.A.F.I. program. After retiring from teaching in Louisiana, he taught mathematics in Burkeville, Texas for five years and at Barbe High School in Lake Charles.
Coach Paris organized an implemented the first summer youth program for Vernon Parish in the summer of 1957. He served as the first commissioner of that program for four years. The program is still active today.
He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Leesville for over 60 years. He served the Lord faithfully as a Bible teacher and deacon. For the past four years, he has been a member of Moss Bluff First Baptist Church. Ted read the Bible completely through eight times. He said he learned something different every time he read it.
Ted was active in civic affairs and parish government. In 1979 Ted was elected to the Vernon Parish Police Jury where he served a four year term. In 1998 he was elected to the Vernon Parish School Board and served a four year term. During his life he was a member of the Jaycees, the Rotary Club and the N.H. Bray Masonic Lodge.
Ted was an avid sports fan. Of course his favorite teams were the Wampus Cats, LSU Tigers, New Orleans Saints, and the Southeastern Lions where his grandson, Marshall, plays football as the starting left guard.  His passion for and success in athletics was due to his competitive spirit. He loved playing games and dominoes with friends and his grandkids. He seldom lost a game of dominoes. One of his favorite sayings was "A good loser is still a loser." Another favorite activity was drinking coffee with his ROMEO (Retired Old Men Eating Out) buddies in Leesville.
Ted was a man of integrity, a kind and loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. His quick wit and great sense of humor made him a pleasure to be with. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. Our loss is Heaven's gain.
Ted is survived by his wife Sherry of 55 years; son Rev. Michael Paris and wife Ruthie of Moss Bluff; daughter, Dr. Nita A. Paris of Acworth, Ga.; grandson, Marshall Paris of Hammond; granddaughter, Mandy DuBose and husband Jake of Ragley; grandson, Matthew Paris and wife April and great grandson Blace Dever Paris all of Lake Charles; sister, Betty Cantrell and brother-in-law Travis of Jonesboro, Ga. Ted was preceded in death by his mother and father Anne and C.E. (Buddy) Paris and his brother, James (Jimmy) Paris.
A viewing and visitation will be at Hixson Funeral Home, in Moss Bluff on Monday, Dec. 27, 2010 from 5 to 8 p.m. Visitation and viewing is set again for 10 a.m. today, Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2010 at the First Baptist Church in Leesville until the time of service at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church. Rev. Wallace Palmer, Rev. John Burns and Rev. Jerry Penfield will be officiating. Burial will be at the Leesville Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Ted Paris Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Merchants and Farmers Bank of Leesville or Lake Charles.  Words of comfort to the family may be expressed at www.hixsonfuneralhomes.com.

TED PARIS a GREAT AMERICAN. A true son of the South .... A Louisiana Legend. He touched many and made a wonderful community leader. He is the kind of person we all hope our children will grow up to be like. He has gone on to that LSU TIGER DEN in the sky. God bless TED PARIS.

I have fond memories of my times spent at the Paris home with lots of laughter and fun. Mr.Paris was, as large as he was, soft spoken and tender. He was a real southern gentleman. Mrs.Paris, Mike , Nita and Ruthie you are all in my heart and prayers.

This is very sad news. Very few people can actually hold a unique place in the History of a town--Coach Paris was one of those. I am one of the fortunate few who can remember sitting by the radio and listening to the LSU games and the pride that my family, and for that matter all of us in town felt every time the announcer mentioned Ted Lynn Paris from Leesville. It was even more fun when his dad would come into my Dad's shoe repair shop and recreate some of the highlights. However, he did so much more for our town--he was a great role model, great coach, great teacher, (even though I was far from being one of his best students), and, I am proud to say, a great friend and neighbor. He will be missed.

Mr. Paris was the first principal I taught under. I am so thankful as he was so great to serve with. I also went to church with him. It was always easy to see how much he loved the Lord! He will surely be missed on this side of heaven but know there is great rejoicing in Heaven and a lot of visiting going on too.

My condolences to the Paris family. "Coach" was my teacher in three different math classes during my high school career. Although I graduated in '63 and have been gone from Leesville since '72, the lessons I learned from Coach Paris have stayed with me throughout those years. It was only after I was an adult that I developed an appreciation for his wit and humor. Thank you Coach - you touched many lives in positive and different ways.

Michael Shockley LHS '64 Fullback on Coach Paris' 1963 District Champion Wampus Cats. A fine man who gave me a start towards being a man. He overheard me asking Jackie Self's dad, George, if he had soccer shoes for sale in his western auto store when I first moved to Leesville. He asked me about myself and if I was hoping to play football at LHS. When I answered yes, he introduced himself and took me to the HS and gave me a brand new pair of shoes and then a tour of the facilitiy and school. He made me feel important. I saw Ted last in 2000 when My arena football team was in Alex to play the team there. Gave him some tickets and he came to the game. I introduced him to my players and we spoke breifly after our victory. I think offten about him.

December 28, 2010

Even through it has been many years since I lived in Leesville, I clearly remember Coach Paris as one of the "rocks" who set a good example during our youth. I wish his family peace at this time.

I first met Coach Paris in 1962 as I played guard and tackle at Natchitoches High School. I had no idea at that time that I would move to Leesvlle (1972-77) and coach Mike in football and baseball.
Coach Paris was one of the first to welcome me to Leesvile. We talked about the Natchitoches, Leesville games he coached in and the ones I played in extensively. Coach Paris was truly a great and wonderful person.
Nita, Sherry, Mike, I am very sorry for your loss, however, you haven't lost him as he is sitting next to God as I write this.

Sherrie and family, I was so sorry to hear of "Coach's death. I have had the privilege of knowing him since 1958 and having him as a math teacher in 61-62. I remember fondly an incident that happened in class one day. As Coach sat proped up against the desk one of the kids in the class noticed that he had two different shoes on. Besides the fact that they were different colors, one was a slip on and the other tied. He commented it was difficult getting dressed in the dark. I was also at LHS in '63 when we won the district title; was such a great feeling for everyone. Please know that you all in my prayers as well as those of my mother and brother. Sincerely, Claire Jas, Carrie Rayford & John M. Rayford, III.

Ms. Sherry, Mike and Nita, please know that ya'll are in our prayers. I know what it means to lose a loved one. I'm glad I got to see Mr. Ted and Mrs. Sherry a few years ago at my nieces memorial service. Still think of all of you a lot.

Sherry, Aleta and I offer our condolences upon hearing of Ted's passing. As fellow educators we were always acutely aware of Ted's contributions to the Vernon Parish School System. As a fellow administrator I was always happy to work with him whenever the opportunity presented itself.

Aleta has often told me of her earliest memory of Ted, when as a member of First Baptist Church, he was one of several from the church who donated blood to her mother, Margie Lumpkin, when she was seriously ill at the time of the birth of Aleta's younger brother.

The last time I saw Ted was a couple of months ago. Although his illness had taken its toll on his strength and body it had not robbed him of that infectious smile which always made people happy to be around him.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you and the entire family during this difficult time.

We send our prayers and love to Mrs. Sherry Paris, Mike, Ruthie, and all the family. We know Mr. Ted is in Heaven and rejoicing in his beautiful rewards as a Christian. We love ya'll!

I was certainly sorry to hear of Coach Paris' passing. I am glad that I was able to see him last week. It meant a lot to me. Coach Paris laid his hand on many a Wampus Cat Alum. He led us ways that I cannot explain. I don't think that I have known three finer gentlemen in my life than my high school coaches, Ted Paris, Richie Bullock and Moose Munyan and I listed Coach Paris first for a reason. Mine and Becky's thoughts and prayers are with the family.

God has received the greatest Christmas Present this year. Sherry, I so remember Ted coming by to pick daddy up to go out visiting on Monday evening,I think. I remember the strong arm around me at the cemetary when we put daddy to rest. I've been having a tough time this year but I'm praising the Lord because I know mom and dad (Joe and Margie) are there with Jesus this year and now I know Ted is with them too. Please know I love you and I'm praying for you. Sharron Roberts (Phil 1:3)

Hey Paris Family - so sorry to hear of your loss of Mr. Ted. Nita, I know you have a good picture of our Heavenly Father because of your Dad. I can certainly relate to that. Love yall - Brian & Debbie & Phil & Benjamin Thomas
