David Wehrmeister Obituary

David R. Wehrmeister

March 22, 1957 - November 13, 2024

David R. Wehrmeister, beloved husband, father, friend, and community leader, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. Born and raised in South Toledo, Dave's lifelong connection to the Boys & Girls Clubs began at just 10 years old, when he joined the South Toledo Boys Club. His deep commitment to youth development blossomed from that moment, shaping his entire life.

Dave's career with the Club started as a coat-check clerk. He held instructor positions, and was the Director of Operations, before becoming the Executive Director of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Toledo in 2000, a role he held with dedication for two decades.

Dave's leadership was instrumental in expanding opportunities for Toledo's youth. Among his proudest career accomplishments was overseeing the integration of Boys & Girls Clubs into Toledo Public Schools, allowing students easy access to club resources. He also played a key role in creating collaborative partnerships with local organizations, like the YMCA, Toledo Museum of Art, Metroparks, and the Toledo Zoo. His influence reached thousands of children and staff by encouraging them to pursue their dreams with confidence.

Outside of work, he orchestrated 25 years of golf outings with his brother and many childhood friends. He also organized a friends and family hockey pool for more than 30 years. He was a proud member of the Kiwanis Club of Toledo, and parishioner at OLPH Church.

Above all, Dave was a loving family man. He is survived by his wife, Lisa, whom he called "the greatest love of my life," and children, Adam Wehrmeister, Nathan (Katie) Wehrmeister, and Anna Wehrmeister. He cherished his time with them, whether playing golf, cooking family meals, or simply being present in their lives. He is also survived by sisters, Mary Kay Lehner and Janet Motter; and brother, Tom (Judy) Wehrmeister. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Ruth (Blake) Wehrmeister; and sister, Nancy Samson.

Friends may visit on Tuesday, November 19, from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., at Coyle Funeral Home, 1770 S. Reynolds Rd., Toledo, OH 43614. A Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, November 20, at 10:00 a.m., at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 2255 Central Grove, Toledo, OH 43614. Committal Services will follow at Toledo Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Toledo, continuing Dave's lifelong mission of supporting and uplifting youth.

I was saddened to learn that David passed away. What a great person especially for his dedicated involvement with the Boys and Girls Club. Although I did not know him personally, I was friends with his sister Janet and she shared memories about David. Janet and I worked together at OCF and instantly became friends.
My deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences to his family during this difficult time. My love and prayers to Janet and all of you. May your memories of David stay in your hearts forever. God Bless all of you. May David Rest In Eternal Peace.

I had the distinct pleasure to meet David when I joined the board of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Toledo in 1989. We became fast friends as I worked with David on various committees and fundraising activities. When I eventually became the President of the board for a two year stint in 1999-2000 David was the assistant to Ken Ruben who was our Executive Director. Ken took another job within the national organization half way through my tenure but it was an easy fix as David was more than ready to fill those big shoes. There were some doubters but never me - David went on to become one of the finest leaders within the Boys and Girls Club movement and I felt honored for my small part in making that possible. I´m not sure, on reflection, that I´ve ever met a finer guy. He had it all - he was direct yet kind, humorous but not silly, and decent beyond words. I know I´m a better person for having had David in my life.

Just a great person: never forgot where he came from and always knew where he was going. For all who knew him ,we were blessed to have him in our lives.
His career speaks volumes of his devotion to the "Clubs".
Rest in peace my friend.
