Dear Ellie, I am greatly saddened by news of Jim's death. It seemed to me that he and you were always enduring institutions and I relize with a start that none of us is immortal. Jim pledged me to Beta Theta Pi in 1944 before I graduated from Bexley High School and it was a signal event in my life. Going into the Navy after that first quarter at OSU and then coming back in late '46 it wasn't long before Jim was President of Theta Delta and I don't think they have had before or since anyone who could surpass him in the devotion to the principles of the fraternity or anyone who worked harder to make the chapter the outstanding fraternity on campus. I loved him as a friend, mentor and perfect gentleman. I was honored to be an usher at your wedding and was happy that he met and married a woman that was his equal in intelligence, personality and striving for excellence. The tributes I have read in this book of condolences testify to the contributions he made to the lives of many students and there could be no finer epitaph for his life than to conclude and say he mattered so much to so many. Please accept my deepest sympathy and enduring love.

I had only a year at Ohio State in '43-'44, just enough to become a Beta and share the influence of some inspiring upperclassmen - notably including Jim. My Beta experiences in brotherhood and leadership helped provide a sound base for success in my following four years at West Point and through all the later years. A good guy, a strong mentor and role model - I'm blessed to have known him, even so briefly.

Dr. Brunner was truly a great man and will be missed by many. I came to know Dr. Brunner as I was pledging The Epsilon Tau Chapter of Beta Theta Pi in fall of 2002 and I am so greatful that I was able to meet such a kind and caring man. He gave so much to us and I'm happy that I was just able to give back to him, by just doing small things such as raking his leaves or mowing his lawn. He is loved and missed by all.

Dr. Brunner always taught the Beta's to strive for the ultimate goal and nothing is out of our reach as long as we have integrity, work hard and are honest. I am working toward those goals in everything I do and the person I have to thank for this is Dr. Brunner. I have a saying that is etched in glass on my desk that he said to me when I was President of Epsilon Tau and it inspires me everyday, it reads "You can do this, you have all the tools to be successfull, learn and study your competition, compete with them on a daily basis, have determination"
Thank you Ellie for sharing Jim and enabling us to become better men through his cultivation of intellect, friendship and fidelity.

As I reflect on the impact Dr. Brunner had on my life, I can only bring thoughts to mind of a generous and compassionate man. A man who would give and give, yet ask for nothing in return. A man who built a bridge for us in hopes that we would venture into new worlds of thinking and camaraderie.
When I was a young beta, I thought Dr. Brunner was crazy for supporting a group so selfish and undeserving. But as I look back at what we did and how he supported us through thick and thin, I see he was not crazy, he was caring. He did not turn away from the thought of guiding a bunch of overconfident young men stepping into a new world of freedoms. He proudly took these men under his wing and guided them knowing they may not fully appreciate his principles at the time, but someday they may reap the fruit of his teachings.
As I now reflect on what he stood for and why he guided us, I can see the man that he was and the man I yearn to be. I cherish the principles of Brotherhood and Scholarship instilled in me from my days as a member of the Epsilon Tau Chapter of Beta Theta Pi. Dr. Brunner, of Ever Honored Memory, has been and always will be a guiding light to us all.

George Bernard Shaw had said, “Life is no brief candle to me. It is a sort of splendid torch which I have got a hold of for the moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations.” The life of Dr. James A Brunner was as bright as any I have ever seen and we can only try to carry the torch that he has passed on to so many of us.
Dr. Brunner was an inspiration to us all and will be greatly missed.

Mrs. Brunner, Jack and Rick:
Dad just called and told me about Dr. Brunner's passing.... Dr. Brunner meant so much to many people, he was a mentor-teacher-friend to all that met and knew him. I have been active in Fire-EMS and Search & Rescue for over 20 years as a result of being one of Dr. Brunner's scouts from Troop 153...I am now a High School Science teacher as well. He will be missed by many.

Dear Ellie and family,
I am so sorry to hear about your loss.
I had a chance to know Dr. Brunner in the scholar exchange program between the university of Toledo and Yanshan University in China. His dedication to serving his community is not only at Toledo, but also over the Pacific Ocean. He spent a lot of time to develop the relationships among the sister universities. With the help from Dr. Brunner, I was able to join the program, and enriched my research ability at the college of engineering.
Dr. Brunner left us many great gifts. The most important things learned from him are “Take care of people” and “Respect people and culture.”
I remember the first day to meet Dr. Brunner at Detroit Airport at the night on April 1, 1991. Dr. Brunner picked up me and another scholar (Mr. Wang You). The time being at Toledo was close to the middle night. I did not know how old he was. My impression on him was 50 plus. Now I know he was 68 years old. He could ask other people to pick up us at the airport easily, but he did not. On the next day, Dr. Brunner led us to the president’s office and introduced us to the president of UT. I still keep the only picture taken at the president’s office with Dr. Brunner.
In the second week, Dr. Brunner heard that we did not have enough furniture at the apartment. He took us to buy the lump and nightstand, and paid by himself. Later of the week, Dr. Brunner and Ms. Brunner invited us to the dinner at China Garden. Also, he took us for a campus tour. I sat in his car and noted that Dr. Brunner played a classic Chinese music. Wherever I met Dr. Brunner, he always wore a tie with a smile face, even if he sat in his living room. I do not think anyone could keep up this morality at home and work all the time.
What a great example for us. I think all of us have more stories with Dr. Brunner to be shared. Today, I worked at Nucor Steel. Dr. Brunner’s culture perfectly fits the company’s mission statement “ Take care of our customers. Our customers include product users, employees, shareholders and vendors.”
Dr. Brunner will be remembered by me forever.
Sincerely,
Karin Rowe (Loss)

Jack, Ricky, Mrs. Brunner and families -
My thoughts are with you and I am so very sorry for your loss. You must be very proud, reading all of these wonderful tributes to your dad, your husband. Just reading about the piano, his UT contributions and his passion for gardening has brought back so many wonderful memories of Corey Road and the Brunner house and the Brunner family. I just remember how I always thought your dad was gentle and kind and so very smart - (like his boys!) And he must have had so much patience, based on the Boy Scout troop he mentored (our friends, my brother and his friends...) I hope you find some peace and comfort in your memories and your friends and family. Love, Karin

Professor Brunner was one of my most important academic mentors as a student at the University of Toledo. I never recall my undergraduate days without his visage coming to mind. He was a master teacher and during my short time on the faculty an inspiring colleague. I am but one of so many of his students who held him in highest esteem.
He was a gifted man who shared his gifts generously with his students, his university and his community.

My first encounter with Dr. Brunner was in the fall of 2002. After meeting Dr. "B" I knew the organization I was about to join had so much history and love in it just because of the way he would talk about it. I knew that if such an organization, as Beta Theta Pi, could produce such a generous, loving, kind man as Dr. "B", then I needed to be a part of it. During my years as a young Beta I spent a lot of time at the Brunner household and must say I have never been treated so well by a non-family member. Dr. Brunner took care of us Betas as we were his own and I will never forget that nor will no other person touch my life in such a way as he did. Dr. James Brunner is the face of our fraternity and still is the bond that ties us at the Epsilon Tau chapter. I know later in life when I have a family and my son asks me which organization I was a part of I can smile and my first thought will always be of Dr. Brunner. Dr. Brunner, you will be mised. You touched all of our lives in every which way anyone could have. The halls of the Epsilon Tau chapter are empty without you, but you will be with us forever in our hearts. You were the kind of person I could only hope to be half of some day.

My wife Huilan and I want to express our deepest sympathy and condolences to Mrs. Brunner and family. We are shocked to learn that Dr. Brunner has just left us. There is a saying in Chinese: Once a teacher, lifetime father. Dr. Brunner means much more than a teacher to me. Our hearts are saddened knowing that we have lost a good mentor, a dear friend, and a loving father. Dr. Brunner was always there to help, and never asked anything for return. Without Dr. Brunner’s generous help, we could not have been where we are today. We miss Dr. Brunner dearly.

I was a student from China. I was able to came to the United States and study in the University of Toledo thanks to great help from Dr. Brunner. He also provided mentor and advises during my studies in Toledo. Now I am back in China working for an American company but I attribute all my successes to Dr. Brunner. Without him, none of these would be possible.

I wanted to be the first one to sign this book today, but have been sitting in front of the computer for hours not knowing how to put the honor and respect I have for Jim into words.
I still can't, but I'll try.
The two things I admired most about Jim were his dedication to serving his community, and his ability to motivate young people.
He used the second ability to instill in me the first, and etched the words "If it is to be, its up to me" in my brain for the rest of my life.
I remember the week I rushed. Jim invited us all for dinner at Inverness. I didn't know anything about fraternity life, but I was just so amazed that this man was willing to take this scraggly group of random kids from small towns across Ohio, invite them into his country club, and use his retirement fund to create a scholarship fund for them.
Years later, we came to him with an idea for a new Beta house, despite the fact that we had basically blighted the last one, he actually listened. A few months later we had the house. Again, I was amazed at the faith he had in us. I don't think we ever paid the rent on time for the old one, yet he was willing to get us a newer, bigger, better one.
He saw our potential, even if we didn't.
I get a warm feeling inside when i remember the sight of "ET 1" pulling up the driveway, and a sweet little man in a tweed hat and brown overcoat walking up to the house with a big smile on his face.
I remember picking up sticks, and pulling weeds in his garden. I remember lanscaping at the Methodist church, and most of all, I remember going over the grades in his office upstairs, staring at his memorabilia on the wall.
I remember going from a scraggly kid to a young man.
Ellie, I can only hope that I find someone to share a love with like you and Jim share.
Jim, you had a profound impact on me. My life and the world are better because you were in them.

My first memory of Dr. Brunner was singing Beta tunes around the piano in the living room that he and Ellie played. From that moment on I knew what a special person he was. Dr. B offered guidance when you needed it, and showered you in praise when you deserved it. He assisted us in life and career decisions and his knowing that we were doing well in both is all the thanks he needed. Dr. Brunner, our lives are better because we knew you, and the world is lesser of a place without you.

Ellie,
I am so sorry to hear of Jim's passing. He will be missed. His contributions to the University of Toledo and to Toledo in general have made such an impact on so many. I still remember when I first joined the College of Business and it was celebrating its anniversary in the new Glass Bowl and how so many of Jim's former students showed just to say hi to him. His dedication and pride in UT was an inspiration to me and many others. I can't think of too many full professors that anyone would find out on the quad on any given day picking up stray debris. It is a picture that will stay me for many more years to come.
My heart and prayers go out to you and your family.

My thoughts and prayers are with the entire Brunner family and all of those that knew and loved Dr. Brunner. I, along with every man that walked through the halls of the Epsilon Tau Chapter of Beta Theta Pi, will be forever indebted to Dr. Brunner for his leadership and generosity. Without him and the opportunities and friendships that he provided for us, most of us would not be the men that we are today. We've always been so proud of Dr. Brunner and are honored to be affiliated with such an outstanding person.

I had a chance to get to know Dr. Brunner in my junior year at the University of Toledo. He was a true inspiration to myself as an advisor, and as a friend. He was the type of man that always made time for you, no matter what. Dr. Brunner was a great leader, and set an example to all. He was the type of person I could look up to, and look at as a roll model for myself. Dr. Brunner had the morals and ethics that every man should have, and he always knew the right thing to do no matter what the situation. As a fraternity advisor, he helped us through the good times and the bad times, but always looked at the positive things to try and make the Epislon Tau Chapter a true example of the values that Beta Theta Pi demonstrated. From the time I spent with Jim, he showed to me how one man could be a great leader, brother, friend, husband, father, and grandfather all in one. He really was an inspiration to everyone that he ever came in contact with, and he touched my life in a very special way.

Dr. "B" as he was often called as he would enter the fraternity house would cause nothing short of a stampede by fellow brothers to come down and shake his hand. We still talk to this day of the stories he would tell, the leadership ideas he would pontificate and the ideals he instilled. There is no doubt in my mind and I am sure that many of the brothers share my notion when I say that without Brother Brunner we would not be where we are today with the stories and memories we made at Toledo not so long ago.

I remember the days going to Dr. Brunner's house and seeing him working on his yard. He loved to garden, which in turn tried to care and nurture everyone of us.
To say he was the backbone of ET is a gross understatement. He will be sorely missed and beloved by many.
