Linda Cohen Obituary

Linda Karol Cohen

1946 - 2023

In Loving Memory of

Linda Karol Cohen

Linda K. Cohen, a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours on Sunday, August 27, 2023, with her children, Joshua and Sarah, by her side holding her hands. Linda's remarkable journey began as she was born on August 12, 1946, to Joseph and Karen Karol who miraculously survived the Stutthof & Dachau Concentration Camps. Unfortunately, her brother (Aaron) and her sister (Miriam) where killed by the Nazis at Auschwitz.

The Jewish Community helped Linda and her parents move from Munich, Germany, to Toledo, Ohio, in 1949. Upon graduating from DeVilbiss High School, Linda graduated in 3 years from Ohio State University. She attained several degrees in education with a focus on special education, which is when her love and passion for children started to blossom. Her teaching career started in Chicago, Illinois and Washington D.C. before moving back to Toledo and serving as a special education teacher at Northview High School in Sylvania, Ohio. Upon retiring from teaching, Linda continued her advocacy for children as a Lucas County Court Appointed Special Advocate at CASA.

Linda's life was a testament to her resilience, love and the indomitable human spirit. She was deeply rooted in the history of her parents' survival and the strength they imparted to her. Her journey was a tribute to their survival, inspiring her to live life fully and embrace every moment.

Linda's greatest passion in life was her beautiful family and friends and most importantly her cherished children and grandchildren. Surviving are her husband of 54 years, Michael; sons, Joshua (Celimar), Benjamin (Teri); daughter, Sarah (Chris); six grandchildren, (London, Sammy, Ari, Max, Eli and Henry); and an extended family in Israel.

As a mother, Linda's nurturing presence and unwavering support shaped their lives and inspired them to embrace the values of love, kindness and resilience. As a grandmother, Linda reveled in the joys of family. Her role as a grandmother brought her so much joy, creating treasured memories that will be cherished for generations to come. Her love for her grandchildren was evident in every smile, kiss, touch, laugh and tender moment they shared.

Outside of her family, Linda's heart belonged to the children she taught, her close friends and anyone fortunate enough to cross her path. Her kindness, generosity and genuine nature left an imprint on the heart of all who knew her. Linda loved traveling, shopping, baking, cooking (especially during the Jewish holidays), gardening, attending art shows, arts-and-crafts, playing cards, scuba diving and hosting house parties. One of her favorite activities was riding her bike through the streets of Chicago, Illinois and along the waterfront of Lake Michigan.

Linda's life was also surrounded by several devoted best friends, Sheryl Levin, Rene Kozloff and Ginny Washing. The love these women shared will forever continue with their own countless memories and their continued bonding with Linda's children and grandchildren. Her kindness, generosity and genuine nature left an imprint on the hearts of all who knew her. Her absence will be deeply felt and her memory will forever serve as a reminder of the beauty and depth of a life well lived.

Linda's family would like to specially thank the incredible staff at Charter Senior Living in Sylvania, Ohio, Flower Hospital and Hospice of Northwest Ohio for their loving care and support.

Linda's light will continue to shine in the lives of those she touched. In the time of sorrow, may we find solace in the memories we shared and the lessons she taught us through her extraordinary journey. She will be remembered with love, gratitude and a sense of profound loss. May she rest in peace, knowing that her legacy of love, strength and kindness will forever continue on in all of our hearts.

Funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on August 30th at Temple Shomer Emunim at 6453 W Sylvania Avenue, Sylvania, OH 43560, followed by interment at Beth Shalom Cemetery and then concluded with a meal of condolence and family visitation between 4-7 p.m. back at Temple Shomer Emunim.

During my two years at the University of Toledo, Linda and I met and became friends. Meeting her parents gave me a rare insight into the transition they and others faced due to war; I was struck by the bond they shared and the enduring faith they maintained in life. Through Facebook, years later, Linda´s evident adoration for her family was palpable and ever strong. I´m so saddened by her passing and offer my condolences to the family. RIP Dear Linda.

We were lucky to share many happy vacations together with Linda & Mike to beaches in the Caribbean & adventures abroad in Viet Nam, Patagonia, & Africa. One favorite memory was in Viet Nam. After lunch one day, Linda decided to do a little shopping & exploring on her own. When it came time to board the bus, she was nowhere to to found. Mike, Arnie & I became somewhat concerned, but sure enough there Linda appeared all smiles riding on the back of a motorcycle just in time.
