Robert Fournier Obituary

FOURNIER Robert Albert Robert Albert Fournier, son of Alphonse and Catherine, born August 14, 1917, died December 29, 2008. Dad was a life long resident of Toledo and a graduate of Macomber High School. He started his career as an electrician and in 1940 joined the US Coast Guard and served in World War II. Dad was one of the first crew that served on the Coast Guard Cutter Mackinac. Dad worked as an electrician at Autolite and Prestolite until his retirement at age 62. He married JoAnn Hudak of Cheboygan Michigan in November of 1945 and they celebrated their 63rd anniversary in November 2008. Dad was a long time member of Blessed Sacrament Parish where he became a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus, Council 386. Dad spent countless hours helping his family, friends and neighbors with his superior mechanical ability and knowledge of electricity. Dad truly was a man of God and showed us all how to live a life of faith. So many lives were touched by this great man who gave so generously of his time and talent. Dad, we love you and we will miss you. He was preceded in death by his five sisters, Irene Henry, Ruth Saxenmeyer, Lucille Hinkle, Virginia Szychowski and Mary Pero-Rife. Surviving are his wife, JoAnn; sons, David (Esther), Robert (Donna), James (Kristin) and daughters, Mary (Bob) McClellan, Patti (Mike) Shumer; 18 grand children; 10 great-grandchildren and brothers-in-law, Bob Hinkle and Albert Szychowski and sister-in-law, Mildred Podgorski. Eternal rest grant unto him, Oh Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon him. Our dad has donated his body. He gives even in death. A memorial Mass for our dad will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Blessed Sacrament Parish or Hospice of Northwest Ohio.

Those of us who knew Bob or "Grandpa" as we called him, knew what a wonderful man he was. I will always remember the days we we go and visit him. Mr. Fournier was like a grandfather to all of us kids on Rood St., even though we are all young adults now. Mr. Fournier, we will never forget you.

Your Dad was my mother's (Catherine Weissenberger Jordan)first cousin whom I remember from when we used to visit when I was a child and when you brought him to RCIA. I am deeply saddened by his loss and will pray for him, you, his family and all who hold his memory dear.

Dearest Fournier's, I am sorry to hear of your loss. I know how hard it is to lose a loved one, especially aroung the holidays. Mr. Fournier was a wonderful person, neighbor, and second father to all kids on Rood. I will never forget all the beautiful memories that were created growing up on Rood. I am so glad that my husband had a chance to meet both Mr. and Mrs. Fournier the last time we were in town. It was wonderful sharing old stories and creating new memories too. I am so grateful for your dad and family for being a part of my life. He will never be forgotten.

We are so sorry to hear that Bob has passed. Being his next door neighbor for five years was a joy. I still remember my youngest boy at the time, sitting on our split rail fence talking with Bob many times. My kids loved Bob, we were blessed to have a person to fill in for the grandfather they never had. My dog Shadow, who did not like most people, adored Bob. We all missed Him and JoAnn when we moved. We will always cherish the pictures we have of Bob.
