Mildred Bryant Edwards

1941 - 2022

The long life of Mildred Bryant Edwards was marked by her strong sense of duty and her determination to dedicate her life to her family and to her community. During her last days she continued to command a place of affection, and respect as a reassuring figure in the hearts of family and friends. She became for many who loved her the one constant point in a rapidly changing society. Her success in maintaining her family and friends through turbulent times was even more remarkable given that at her birth no one could see her ruling with and sharing a kind heart would be her destiny. Mildred Bryant Edwards was born on 24 January1941, in Macon County Georgia, the child of Mary Etta and Charlie Bryant. She was educated in the New Jersey School System and brought up in a loving family atmosphere. She later attended Mercer County Community College where she achieved her degree and several certifications in the Legal fields. She later went to work for the New Jersey Office of Public Defender, after some time and dedication to her duties she retired, then enjoyed the fruits of her labor. On 7 September 1959, she married Benny Joyner Edwards and they enjoyed a relatively normal life for some time. Their first child, Julia Ann was born in 1959, followed by a son Troy who arrived in 1963, and Michael the following year in 1964. Mildred enjoyed traveling and has visited various countries and places such as Hawaii, Las Vegas, the Caribbean Islands to name a few, and has enjoyed several cruises to various locations. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Julia Ann Edwards; her special niece, Robin Lee Kelly; her sister, Gladys Bryant and brother, Charles Bryant. Mildred is survived by her brothers, Jimmy Bryant and Bruce Coleman; her sons, Troy and Michael Edwards; grandchildren, Tricia, David, Jasi Mikai, Teri, Michelle, Troy, Jr., Michael, Jr. and Rasheedah Phillips; great-grandchildren, Makayla, Jai and Iyonna Phillips; daughter-in-law, Takako Edwards; nephew, Marc Madison; her sisters-in-law, Ruth Edwards Speight, Edna E. and Geraldine; brothers-in-law Duke, Rossie, William, and Melvin Speight. She is also survived by her closest and dearest friend, Lula Matthis. Funeral services will be Thursday, September 29, 2022 at 10:00am at Campbell Funeral Chapel 1225 Calhoun St, Trenton, NJ 08638. Interment will be in Colonial Memorial Park, 3039 S. Broad St., Hamilton, NJ 08610 Visitation will Thursday from 8:30am to 10am at the chapel.
