Janice Galloway Obituary

Janice (Clelland) Galloway, 83, of Delmont, died Sunday, Nov. 12, 2023, at UPMC East, Monroeville. She was born July 20, 1940, in Pittston, a daughter of the late Carl R. and Margaret (Parry) Clelland. Janice graduated from West Pittston High School in 1958. In high school, Janice was a majorette and expert baton twirler, an editor of the high school yearbook and a member of the concert band. During her junior year, Janice was crowned Snowball Queen at the Snowball Dance, the major social event for that area of Northeastern Pennsylvania. Her life's ambition as a child was to be a nurse and she took her training at the Nesbitt Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1961, and passing her state boards to become a registered nurse that same year. Janice joined two friends and worked in labor and delivery at the Morristown (N.J.) Memorial Hospital for two years before moving to Pittsburgh to marry her seventh grade and forever sweetheart, Dick Galloway, on Dec. 21, 1963, in Pittston. The newly married couple resided in Pittsburgh while Dick finished his second and third years at Pitt Law School with Janice working at Magee Hospital and, later, the Pittsburgh VA Hospital to provide financial support. Janice and Dick had two children: Lisa, who was born in 1966, and Rick, who was born in 1969. Janice retired from her nursing career to be a full-time loving mom. In 1998, Lisa and her husband, Jeffrey Monzo, had the first of Janice and Dick's four grandchildren, Connor, who before his first birthday gave Janice the name "Bon," later expanded to "Bonni." The name caught on with a vengeance. In 2000, granddaughter Megan Monzo was born, followed by Rick's children, Logan in 2000 and Sydney in 2004. Not only did all four grandchildren call her Bonni (which she loved!) but so did the dozens of their friends and teammates in the various sports that they participated in. Janice was the acknowledged advocate for each and all of the grandchildren, who could do no wrong in her eyes- just ask their parents. When a local school student was killed crossing Route 66 at Manor Road in Delmont, Janice and another Delmont mom started an organization called "A.L.I.V.E." (A Light Is Very Expensive) to get a traffic control light at that intersection, which cost $200,000. They organized fund-raisers and lobbied legislators and succeeded in getting, for the first time, the traffic control light that you see at that intersection to this day. After her children left for college, Janice went back to her nursing career, working for a number of years at the offices of East Suburban Ob/Gyn in Monroeville and White Oak, ultimately rising to the position of clinical supervisor. She retired from that position, but later became medical consultant for the Galloway Monzo law firm, before finally retiring to her favorite job as Bonni, mom and wife. Janice and Dick enjoyed traveling to Aruba, Virgin Gorda, the Bahamas, Bermuda and twice to Australia. Janice especially enjoyed family beach vacations on the Outer Banks. They enjoyed sailing on their sailboat on the Chesapeake and their motorhome trips to the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone and other western sites, as well as South Florida. Janice was a PTA officer, an officer of the Westmoreland Lawyers' Wives and a longtime board member of the Westmoreland Bar Foundation. In sum, Janice exemplified a life filled with love and caring and fun and service. You considered yourself fortunate if she touched your life. Janice is survived by her beloved and devoted husband of 60 years, Richard H. "Dick" Galloway; loving children, Lisa (Jeffrey) Monzo and Rick Galloway; four cherished grandchildren, Connor D. Monzo, Megan T. Monzo, Logan M. Galloway and Sydney L. Galloway; her dearest sister, Karen (late Richard) Newby; brothers and sisters-in-law, Ronald and Nancy Book and Robert and Patricia Galloway; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend their deepest thanks to the staff at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at UPMC East, Monroeville for their wonderful and compassionate care of our beloved Janice. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, 2023, at BASH-NIED-JOBE FUNERAL HOME, 152 Abbe Place, Delmont, 724-468-8381, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 17. Interment will follow in Twin Valley Memorial Park, Delmont. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Janice C. Galloway Nursing Student Fund at Westmoreland County Community College. Gifts can be made online at www.westmoreland.edu/give, or by mailing your contribution to Westmoreland Educational Foundation Inc. at 145 Pavilion Lane, Youngwood, PA 15697. online condolences can be given at www.BashNiedJobeFuneralHome.com.

Dear Mr. Galloway, Lisa and Ricky, I remember all of you so well from my babysitting days. I always loved Janice, she was such a wonderful wife, Mom and nurse. I grew up on your Buena Vista Dr. and was at your house babysitting quite a bit. Just wanted to express my condolences for your loss and my wonderful memories of Janice. I too am an RN. Dear Dick and family, The last time I saw Janice was when she hailed me outside an office building next to Westmoreland Hospital in its original iteration, At that time I wasn´t aware she was an RN. Such a friendly person that I can´t claim to know well but I was impressed that she remembered me by face and name.
I offer my heartfelt condolences to all of you. I know she´ll be missed.
