Marianne Flaherty Obituary

Marianne Marshall Flaherty, 84, of Greensburg, formerly of Mt. Pleasant, passed away Sunday, March 16, 2008. She was born May 1, 1923, in Americus, Ga., a daughter of the late George O. and Martha Pryor Marshall. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas J. Flaherty; a son, Robert D. Flaherty; and sisters, Louise Cosgrove and Wilma Martin. She graduated from the University of Georgia and worked for the Georgia Power Co. before she married and moved from Americus, Ga., to Pennsylvania. Marianne was immensely proud of her southern heritage and maintained a southern accent for her whole life. Marianne was an active member of the Middle Presbyterian Church, Mt. Pleasant, for 50 years, where she was a deacon, a Helper's Guild member and a Sunday school teacher for more than 30 years. She was also a volunteer for the Red Cross Blood Bank and the local Literacy Council. Survivors include sons, T. James Flaherty and his wife, Judi, of Greensburg, and Dale Flaherty and his wife, Linda, of Mt. Pleasant; grandchildren, Brian, Kathy and husband Greg, Kelly, Tommy, Patrick, Terri, and Lt. David and wife Tessa; great-granddaughter, Madeline; brother, George O. Marshall and his wife, Charlotte, of Athens, Ga.; and sisters, Sue Smith, of Athens, Ga., and Ruth Thomas and her husband, Russell, of Sarasota, Fla. Marianne's family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the JAY A. HOFFER FUNERAL HOME, Norvelt. Her funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Middle Presbyterian Church with Pastor Stuart Adams officiating. Interment to follow in Middle Presbyterian Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant. Should friends desire, memorial remembrances may be made in Marianne's name to the Benevolent Fund, Redstone Highlands, 6 Garden Center Drive, Greensburg, PA 15601.
