Elmer Long

1942 - 2022

Elmer Long, 79, of Washington Township, passed away Thursday, Oct. 6, 2022, in AHN-Allegheny Valley Hospital, Natrona Heights. Born Dec. 2, 1942, in Tazwell, Tenn., he was a son of the late Austin and Elsie (Cosby) Long. Elmer lived in Washington Township most of his life and served our country with the Navy. He was a union carpenter for 38 years through the Union No. 333 in New Kensington. Elmer and his wife, Nancy, were the previous owners/operators of Small World Day Care, JetSpray Car Wash, Tomorrow's Rentals and Foster Fire Equipment. Elmer was a member of Poke Run Presbyterian Church, where he served as a past trustee. Additional past memberships include the Washington Township V.F.D., the Washington Township Planning Committee, the Syria Shriners, a former assistant Boy Scout leader and a 32nd degree Mason with the Apollo Masonic Lodge No. 437. Elmer loved traveling with his wife and was a huge fan of NASCAR, attending many races. He was a regular for breakfast and lunch at Le Cafe, where he was able to spend time with his friends. Elmer liked working on puzzles and could often be seen sitting on his front porch. He most loved spending time with his family. In addition to his parents, Elmer was preceded in death by numerous aunts and uncles. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Nancy Jane (McKown) Long; son, Edward (Amy) Long, of Orchard Hills; daughter, Becky (Michael) Conner, of Washington Township; grandchildren, Josh (Debbie Goldberg) Long, Jenna (Pete) Schultz and Ty Conner; brother, Austin M. (Becky) Long, of Monroe, Mich.; many other brothers, a sister, nieces, nephews and cousins; and his close friend, Kenny Prahl. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. until the hour of service at 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 10, 2022, in the CURRAN-SHAFFER FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORY INC., 100 Owens View Ave., Apollo, with Pastor Pete Goetschius officiating. A masonic service will be conducted at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the funeral home. Private interment will be in Poke Run Presbyterian Church Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
