GEORGE LUND Obituary

George Lund February 22, 1929 ~ August 12, 2013 Good Man ~ Loving Father George Lund was born in Chicago, the second child of George and Alice (Caleb) Lund (Paulsen). He was surrounded by women his entire life, and died peacefully surrounded by his loving family. He was soft spoken, but had conviction of thought. He secretly had a soft spot for babies. A real son of Illinois, he grew up in Chicago, Niles Center, Skokie, and Barrington. His youth was not misspent as a pin setter at his father's bowling alley and as a local caddy; both avocations he enjoyed to the very end. Daughters were not allowed to caddy as the clubs were too heavy! He enjoyed his pipe on sunny and cloudy days. Pioneer computer programmer in the late 1950's and original skunk works programmer for United Airlines, he helped design the original Apollo ticketing program, elements of which are still in use to this day. He retired in November 1991. After the loss of his beloved wife he moved to Tacoma, Washington, where he lived a life of leisure, continuing to golf, bowl, play bridge, and attend operas and symphonies. George graduated in June 1950 with a B.A. in Physics from Knox College, where he met and soon thereafter married Kathryn Ann Reed. He now continues their love affair in heaven. He was an Army reservist during the Korean War. He was preceded in death by wife, Kathryn Reed Lund; and his sisters, Dorothy and Patricia. He is survived by an affectionate family including his two daughters, Deborah Lund and her husband Roy Day (granddaughters Meagan and Haley) and Diana Nordlund and her husband Chase Nordlund (grandchildren Gillian, Olivia, and Gabriel); his sister, Betty Ann Talley of Savannah, Georgia; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial celebrating his life will be held October 26, 2013 at 2:00pm at the Tacoma Lutheran Retirement Community's Mortvedt Center. Wear a bow tie, please! Please leave online condolences at www.gaffneycares.com. Arrangements by Gaffney Funeral Home, 253-572-6003.

George was a great man and a wonderful friend to my mother. We will all miss him greatly and unfortunetly Jane won't understand that Greorge has moved on until she is probably there herself. Nancy
