Stanford Bazilian Obituary

Dr. Stanford E. Bazilian, age 88, passed away peacefully on May 13, 2017 at the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, where he was surrounded by his family.

A respected psychiatrist and lifelong Philadelphian, Dr. Bazilian was born at HOSPITAL TK in 1928 to Lewis Bazilian, a teacher, and Mildred Bazilian.

He graduated in 1945 from Central High School and matriculated at his father's alma mater, the University of Pennsylvania, from which he received a B.S. in chemistry and was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa society.

He then entered Penn Medical School, where he studied psychiatry, and married a fellow Penn student, with whom he had a son. After graduating in 1953, Dr. Bazilian joined the U.S. Army and moved with his family to Texas to become the base psychiatrist at Fort Hood. He returned to Philadelphia in 1957 and continued to practice psychiatry in the area.

In 1977, he wed Fiona Cole, a former nurse and native of Belfast, Ireland.

They lived together in Elkins Park, along with several cherished toy poodles and cats, until his passing.

Professionally, Dr. Bazilian was known for his ceaseless dedication to his work and to his patients. He practiced full time at three different local clinics up until his retirement this past September.

Dr. Bazilian was also an accomplished ballroom dancer and a great lover of music-a trait that was passed down to his son Eric, who went on to become a songwriter, musician and founding member of The Hooters, of which Dr. Bazilian was the undisputed No. 1 fan.

(Until recently, he could often be spotted dancing in the front row at the band's live shows across the U.S. and Europe.) He threw himself head-first into all of his passions, from traveling to collecting antiques and stamps to staying abreast of the latest trends in technology and healthcare, always sharing his findings with anyone who might benefit.

In addition to his wife and son, Dr. Bazilian leaves behind two step-daughters, Shauna and Julie, a daughter-in-law, Sarah, a son-in-law, John, and eight grandchildren: Stephen, Emma, John Michael, Rachel, Amanda, Simon, Rebecca and Maia. He was preceded in death by his daughter Maura and brother Robert.

Dr. Bazilian's vibrant spirit, his exuberance and his infectious love of life will be forever carried in the hearts and memories of his family and of the many friends, neighbors, colleagues and patients whose lives he touched.

Those who had the privilege of knowing him will certainly agree that "Dr. B" was, as he might have put it, a not-so-average geeg.

I met Stan in the late 1970's together with his new wife Fiona in London, he was a very enthusiastic stamp collector of early Great Britain used postage stamps with a wonderful eye for quality.
He was a lovely man and I’m sure sorely missed by all that had the pleasure of knowing him.

Rest in peace, my doctor, my friend. Your love of life and great humour will stay with me always. Best merengue I ever learned was from you and only you. You were the only psychiatrist who could reach me after the death of my son. Thank you for saving my life. With respect and admiration, Annie
