John Mainella Obituary

LATHAM - John V. Mainella, 78, founder and owner of the Bella Napoli Bakery of Troy and Latham, died Friday, March 15, 2013, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
Born and raised in the small village of Acquaviva in the Molise region near Naples, Italy, John was the son of the late Domenico and Cristina Padula Mainella (DeCarlo). He came to the United States at the age of 16 and resided in Troy.
A baker by trade, in 1957, John established Bella Napoli Bakery and began baking bread and rolls, for which he became known far and wide. He relocated his bakery to its current location on River Street and added cookies, cakes, pastries and other delicious items to his growing line of delicious baked goods.
In 1982, John opened a second location, Bella Napoli Bakery, Sandwich and Coffee Café, at the corner of Watervliet-Shaker Road and Route 9 in Latham.
Dedicated to hard work, John built a lasting reputation of producing baked goods of quality and good taste.
He was a generous man with a large heart who enjoyed helping others in any way that he could.
John loved his family and enjoyed the times he spent with them. He truly appreciated his employees and considered them an extension of his family. John also appreciated his Italian heritage and returned many times to the village of his birth. While visiting there, John would often volunteer his time and assisted with remodeling and building additions onto the village church.
He enjoyed traveling and counted Canada and Buenos Aires, Argentina among the places he visited. He was a member of the Sons of Italy Roma Intangible Lodge No. 215 in Albany.
John's passing leaves a large void in the hearts of those who loved him. He will truly be missed by all those whose lives he touched.
He was the beloved husband for 58 years of Phyllis Maselli Mainella; loving father of Dominic (Darleen) Mainella of Latham, Geno (Christina) Mainella of Latham, Victoria (Michael) Signor of Loudonville and Mario (Maureen) Mainella of Colonie; cherished grandfather of Jonathan, Michelle, Francesca, Vincent, Michael and Stefano; and dear brother of Michael (June) Mainella of Florida. He is also survived by several dear nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 19, 2013, at Church of St. Pius X on Crumitie Road in Loudonville, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated.
Entombment will take place in St. Francis of Assisi Mausoleum at St. Mary's Cemetery in Troy.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend and may also visit with John's family from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 18, at Bowen & Parker Bros. Funeral Home, 97 Old Loudon Road, Latham (between Eva Street and Park Avenue).
In lieu of flowers, consider a donation to the American Lung Association, 155 Washington Ave., Suite 210, Albany, NY 12210, in memory of John V. Mainella.

Phyllis and children , I am so sorry about John. He was so nice and always said hello to me every time I went in the bakery. I still remember he let me hand carnations out to all the ladies on Mother's Day when I was little and it was so nice he even paid me good money to do that. Heaven must have needed another angel. God bless all of you and just take one day at a time.

Phyllis, Dom, Vicki, Gino, Mario, Mike, June & Family, I was so sad to hear of John's Passing. He was a mentor as well as a Father figure to me for all the years that I worked at the bakery in Troy. I still can hear him joking with me right now as I write this. He was more generous than anyone will ever know. He treated me as family and was right there to help me. I will always admire and respect him for the times and talks we had together. I still to this day talk about my job at Bella Napoli and how John gave me a chance to prove to him that I was a "woman" baker. If I was not at Bella Napoli I would have never met my husband of 20 years. John and your family will always be part of who I am. My heart goes out to the entire family at this time of great loss. You are in my thoughts and prayers....Love, Hollie

March 18, 2013

God looked around his garden
and found an empty space.
Then he looked down upon the earth
and saw your tired face.
He placed his arms around you,
and lifted you to rest.
God's garden must be beautiful,
for he only takes the best.
He knew that you were suffering
He knew you were in pain,
He knew that you would never,
be well on earth again.
He saw the road was getting rough
and the hills were hard to climb,
So he closed your weary eyelids,
and whispered.."peace be thine"
It broke our hearts to lose you,
but you did not go alone,
A part of us went with you,
the day God called you home.
If love would have saved you,
you never would have died.

Love Ruthie.....

So very sad to have heard of John's passing. Sending our deepest sympathy to John's entire family and those closest to him. I have so many wonderful memories of working at Bella Napoli Bakery through my high school and college years. To me, John was the leader of an incredible family and business that made us all feel as if we were part of their family. Although I'll admit I sometimes didn't know what he was saying with his Italian accent - his smile was a sure message of his approval and one I will never forget!
May he rest in peace and watch over his incredible family and may his memory live on forever... as the bakery that he started has and will continue to create so many good and tasty memories for families of the Capital District and way beyond. God Bless!

March 16, 2013

Your father is a man like no other. He gave you life, nurtured you, taught you, dressed you, fought for you, held you, shouted at you, kissed you, provided for you, but most importantly loved you unconditionally.
There are not enough words I can say to describe just how important a father is to his child. Your Dad is/was a powerful and positive influence to many. May you all be blessed with the gift he bestowed on you……..A father's Love. You are all in our hearts and Prayers. Love Carol (Lindheimer) and Joseph Salerno Rest in Peace.

March 16, 2013

When I was 14 years old..I wanted to work. I wanted to make my own paycheck. I was hired at the Bella Napoli Bakery in Latham and I loved it! I met some really GREAT people. John the owner was one of them. He was a good man, nice boss and treated people fairly and with respect. At the ripe age of 14…and working at the bakery John and his family Phyllis, Dom, Geno, Vicky, Carmen, Mario and Theresa...made you feel like you were part of their family. John cared, he loved and had a huge heart. John and his family hired my oldest sisters Tina, Carol, and MaryAlice and at one particular time we were all working there…..it would be funny to hear John say in his italian accent "Which one are yoU?" He knew us girls were sisters….and like my own parents would call on us and ramble out all four names before he got it right and smiled that great big smile when he did.
John~ you were loved by many and will be missed by all.
My heartfelt condolences to the entire Mainella family.

Mainella Family,
While it's been awhile, I am so sorry for you loss. I considered John a good friend and enjoyed the many spent with him over the years while i was working for Nutmeg Bakers Supply and P. Drescher Co. I considered John a true friend and his family as well.
