I did two rounds of visiting research in Dr. Donald V. Lightner's laboratory in 1995 and 1996 and participated in his shrimp pathology training courses. His training courses had been conducted continuously for decades for people around the world. Many Chinese scholars have participated in his training courses. Through the training courses, participants could clearly grasp the pathology of shrimp. He identified many shrimp pathogens and published a large number of research papers on shrimp pathology and epidemiology. He has traveled to many shrimp-farming countries and came to China in the mid-1980s. He had a very systematic collection of histopathological specimens and sections, and his laboratory had long served as the OIE Reference Laboratories for various crustacean diseases. Don had contributed significantly to the development of shrimp pathology. Fortunately, I had another chance to work with him in the OIE Aquatic Animal Commission for six weeks from 2009 to 2012.
Don was a gentlemanly and humorous scholar, a low-key and amiable person. I remember that he gave me a sealed small envelope as a gift before I left Tucson in 1995 and told me it was a rattlesnake egg inside. When I received it from his hand, it sounded with bouncing voices and shaking in my hand. That really made me startled. After I opened the envelope, I found it actually was a combination of a rubber band and a hairpin. He was happy and laughing. I always remember he liked to put a leg of his glasses in his mouth when he was in serious thinking.
Dr. Lightner will live in our hearts forever.

Met Dr. Lightner during his visit to India at my institute in 2013. A very humble down to earth human irrespective of the position he held in the field of aquaculture . Deeply saddened by his loss and I honor the legacy he left behind.
