Dorothy Downey Obituary

Dorothy Rivenbark (Dodd) Downey May 16, 1913 - July 26, 2008 passed away on July 26, 2008. She was born on May 16, 1913 in Samson, Alabama. Dorothy is survived by her son, Charlie (Julee) Dodd of Marana; her grandson, Andy (Aimee); great- grandchildren, Jackson and Shelby Dodd, of Yorba Linda, California. Dorothy graduated from high school in Alabama, attended business school, and served in the civil service as a secretary on the pilot training flight line at Barksdale Air Force Base in Shreveport, Louisiana during World War II. Dorothy also worked at Nieman Marcus Department Store in Dallas, Texas, was a secretary for the buyer at Breeze Department Store in Memphis, Tennessee, and moved to Tucson in 1955 with her husband, Charles, son Charlie and her mother Georgia Rivenbark. Dorothy was a great, strong and independent single mother who, with help from her mother, raised her son after her husband's death in 1958. Dorothy, in 1982 and at the sweet age of 69, married Raymond J. Downey, who preceded her in death in 1993. Dorothy was a long time member of Grace Episcopal Church, an avid golfer who participated in three golf groups simultaneously at Cliff Valley (Quail Canyon) Par 3, El Rio, and Randolph. One of her favorite stories was her hole in one at the Par 3 Course. Dorothy was very active in shuttling boys to various sporting events and other activities for many years. She also enjoyed many great friends who loved to laugh and have fun participating in bridge, swimming, golf, and just getting together. Dorothy loved life, babies, and had a great sense of humor. The family is extremely grateful for all of the people who cared for Dorothy during the recent years; a heartfelt thank you is extended to each and every one of you. A memorial service will be held at Grace St. Paul's Episcopal Church on a date to be announced. Contributions in Dorothy's memory can be sent to Casa De Los Ninos or a favorite charity. Funeral arrangements are by Adair Funeral Home, Dodge Chapel.

Charlie and Family, It was an honor and I'm priviledged to have taken care of your mother during her final days with us. May you and Julee be blessed with comfort and peace.

Dorothy, you were the greatest. I see that after all of the energy expended raising Charlie (a spot in heaven assured for that endeavor :-)) you still found time to record a hole in one. I am jealous, came within 6 inches but still without a hole-in-one. I still remember all of the good times and your wonderful sense of humor. Rest in peace until we meet again.

When I think of your mom, Charlie, I remember her laugh, smile and that great accent she had. You, Julee and family are in my thoughts and prayers.

There are some people who come into the world that make a big difference. Even though I never knew Mrs. Downey/Dodd, I have learned to appreciate the wonderful life she had. Through her son, Charlie Dodd, I have found Mrs. Downey/Dodd to be an inspiration for all of us. I know she was extremely proud of her son and rightfully so. I send my condolences to all of the Downey-Dodd family. It is my wish that you can find peace in the fact of knowing she led a full and meaningful life.
