Thomas Atwood Obituary

Thomas Jules Atwood, age 71, died on February 9, 2024, in Tampa, Florida, of complications from a recent illness.  Tom had a brilliant and inquiring mind and was a lifelong student of anthropology, artificial intelligence, aeronautics, and the Chinese strategy game of Go.  He spent his childhood in Tucson, Arizona, and was often at the old ranch owned by Marshall and Eva Cruz, learning from them about desert life in the early 1900's. After graduating from the University of Arizona with a degree in Cultural Anthropology, Tom studied at the Max Planck Institute in Germany and developed an affinity for the German language. He enjoyed long conversations in German with his brother George. Tom earned a J.D. from New York University Law School and went on to a distinguished career in journalism and magazine publication. In the early 1990s, he joined Air Age Media and helped revitalize Model Airplane News as Editor-in-Chief.  He was recognized in 1992 by the U.S. Department of Defense for orchestrating a shipment of thousands of RC magazines to armed forces serving in Desert Storm. In 1996 Tom co-founded Flight Journal magazine, which covers full-scale aviation adventure and aviation technology.  Working with Maplegate Media, he founded Robot magazine in 2005 and oversaw that publication until 2013, giving readers in-depth news on the use of robotics in space exploration, medical technology, communications, and military operations. The magazine became an essential resource for students and hobbyists. After retiring, Tom founded the National Robotics Education Foundation, a nonprofit that promotes STEM careers and provides curricula and learning resources for robotics education.  He served as its Executive Director from his home in Wesley Chapel, Florida, until his death.  Tom loved flying remote-controlled aircraft and over the years introduced his children and other family members to the wonders of robots and RC aeronautics, He is survived by his wife Linda Atwood, children Derek and Ashley Atwood, siblings Mary Purdy, George Atwood, and Barbara Atwood (Peter Eisner), nephews Chuck Dickerson, Aaron Eisner, Charles Eisner (Lauren Cvengros Eisner), and Chris Atwood Zou (Helen Zou), nieces Barbie Moneymaker and Rebecca Atwood (Gabe Long), grandnieces Jojo Moneymaker, Rebecca Moneymaker, and Ursula Atwood, grandnephew Forrest Long, and the family dog Penny.

I was saddened to learn of Tom's death as I was preparing an inquiry email about the latest weather event to hit Florida. My sincere condolences to Linda, Derek and Ashley.
Tom and I became good friends during the Robot magazine era and spent many hours on the phone and exchanged countless emails on any number of subjects. His intelligence, honesty and great sense of humor illuminated all our interactions and I wish I could talk to him just one more time. I'll miss you Tom.

Sad to see him go so young. He was an avid support of my project to help people start small home businesses as L'Robotorium shops teaching the "RoboGutsTM S.T.E.A.M. Education Program" ... We often talked on the phone about lots of various subjects and shared past common experiences. I already miss his phone calls.

Was very saddened to hear of Tom's passing. I worked with Tom on several different robotics publications and websites. Tom was an extremely dedicated and intelligent thought leader in the space, and he will be missed by those who knew him. Condolences to Tom's family and friends.

I am sad to hear Tom passed away. I met Tom Atwood at an electric model R/C Fun Fly in Pennsylvania about 33 years ago. Tom approached me to talk about one of my airplanes. We spent some time talking and we became friends. That is the way Tom was.

Tom was the new editor of Model Airplane News magazine and I began submitting articles to the magazine. Our friendship continued to grow and we would spend way too much time yacking on the phone every week. Tom loved to tinker, he encouraged me to tinker, design tests to build stronger models and explore oddball airplanes. He loved oddball, weird, cutting edge, flying contraptions. He gathered around him some of the best modeling minds in the world and encouraged all of them to write about their experiences.

Later, Tom moved on to become the Editor In Chief of FlyRC magazine as well as several other publications.

Through Tom's work with National Robotics Education Foundation, he helped spread the word about new developments in Drones and Robotics.

Tom had many things he was passionate about. He was a husband, a father, writer, editor, roboticist, a flutist, a lawyer, an editor, and a friend.

I will miss you Tom.

Tom was always one of my biggest cheerleaders and encouraged me in all my aviation and photograph projects. He helped make me a better person. We woke up this morning to a rainbow that I'm sure he sent. My first thought was "I wish I could send Tom a photo of this".

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Tom's passing. We have been friends for many years. Tom invited me to a Drone Symposium a few years ago at the Orlando Convention Center. I took a lot of photos for Tom. It was a very memorable three days being with my good friend. He remains one of the most dedicated individuals to science and technology that I have ever met. I will truly miss Tom. RIP

Tom was a long time good friend. I will miss his phone calls and emails where we just chatted about our lives. When I first met him he bought two articles from me for Robot Magazine. I also occasionally contributed to his online news items for the National Robotics Foundation. He will be missed by many.
