We were roomates in 3 South, Bennet Hall. Joe put up with a lot of my silliness and responded by teaching me to dove hunt and to pond jump ducks. The kindest and gentlest soul I will ever know. Sorry we ate your frog legs while you were showering! Miss you Joe.

Also have to add my memory of kayaking in Prince William Sound with Joe and Maria, his partner in latter years. They were impressive paddlers who set the pace for the rest of us.

I am from Iowa. Joe was from Oklahoma. We were both mid-westerners. We met and were friends in Alaska. A few years ago, when he was on a trip back to Oklahoma, he called me in Anchorage. He asked if I wanted to fly down to Oklahoma to go crappie fishing. My immediate thought: Only a man from the Midwest would understand what crappie fishing in a boat on a lake under and endless sky in the 1950s and 1960s is to a boy of the Midwest. For that thought, I'll treasure his kindness.

Joe .... what a warm, kind, gentle, bighearted man. It's hard to believe he's no longer with us. Joe always had time for friends, or strangers who quickly became friends, always willing to help anybody in need.
I will remember Joe with love and gratitude for having known him. My condolences go to his family and his abundant Alaskan friends and most importantly to Maria, his partner of 10 years whom Joe simply adored. She made his world go around.
To celebrate Joe's life and spirit, a potluck gathering will take place on September 30th at 4pm at Viking Hall in Anchorage where we can honor Joe for all the wonderful qualities he shared with us in so many ways. Joe would love a joyful Alaskan send-off so bring along fond memories or outrageous wilderness, fishing, or hunting stories.

Joe planted the rich soil of knowledge to friends in Illinois. To Joe's children, he will always watch over you. To Joe's siblings, friends, co-workers may the memory of Joe forever keep a smile on your faces. May he rest in peace.
