Mildred Walker Obituary

TUSCALOOSA Mrs. A.M. Walker, Jr. (Mildred Newton) passed away September 24, 2007. She was born in Eutaw, Alabama on August 23, 1927 and lived in Selma and Carrollton as a child, but her family moved to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, in the 1930's, where she lived until she moved to Vestavia Hills, Alabama to be near two of her daughters. Mildred was the granddaughter of John Newton and Clemence Harang Newton of New Orleans, Louisiana, and Washington Henry and Lelia Curry Storey of Carrollton, Alabama.

She was predeceased by her parents, Mildred and Jesse F. Newton and her husband, A.M. "Buddy" Walker.

She is survived by her five children: Marion Francis Walker; George Moore (Carolyn) Walker; David Newton (Mary) Walker; MarySue Goodson Walker; Mildred W. (Daryl) Seward; five grandsons, Michael Francis Walker; Robert Sewell Walker; Jesse Peale Walker; Andrew David Walker; John Walker Seward; and one step-grandson, Joshua Ryan Seward and three granddaughters, Mary Kathryn Walker and twins Jennifer Lea and Jessika Storey Seward; and nieces Judy Nisbet (John) Caldwell; Jean Nisbet Cates, and nephew James L. (Faraby) Nisbet, Jr., along with numerous cousins.

Mildred attended Tuscaloosa public schools, graduated from Stephens College in 1947 and from the University of Alabama with a B.A. in 1951, where she was in the Chi Omega Sorority. She was a devoted and successful gardener, loved sports -- especially golf and watching her husband Buddy play in the early years of their marriage. Mildred was a member of the First Baptist Church of Tuscaloosa for more than 50 years and gained a new life when she quit drinking and spent the next 25 years inspiring others with problem drinking, from all walks of life, to do the same. She leaves many friends she loved and who loved her that she met along the way.

Her funeral will be 11 a.m. today, Sept. 26, 2007, at Tuscaloosa Memorial Chapel Funeral Home on Keene's Mill Road with internment thereafter next to Buddy in Tuscaloosa Memorial Park. Tuscaloosa Memorial Chapel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers are her grandsons, first cousin Dr. William E. Wright, and Walker M. Payne.

Donations, in lieu of flowers may be made to Alconon Club, 2025 West River Road, Tuscaloosa, Alabama 35401.
