To Geri and the Stout family,
We were out of the country when David's death occurred, and didn't find out until a few days ago. The sadness is heavy, yet memories of David make us smile. For Chuck's birthday a few years ago, he took us through the Silver Creek tunnel while it was still under construction, and every October we go through it and think about David. His death is such a loss. He was our friend, we will miss him, and pray for you to find peace.

March 21, 2007

Geri and family;
Although my wife Pat and I knew Dave briefly, we wanted you to know what a lasting impression he made upon us. (We met Dave thru Pat's brother Mike Ryan and Corrine).
Always the gentleman,Dave's first impression was that "this is a man with whom you wanted to call friend".
Our deepest sympathies go with you and your family. We share in your grief and are somewhat comforted that Dave suffers no longer.
May the good Lord give you the strength to get thru this ordeal.
Our prayers are with you.

David was a fellow police officer and respected by all who worked with him. He led the Law Enforcement Honor Guard at my father's funeral. It meant so much to me and my family. We will always be grateful to him for making a tough moment a little more bearable.

March 18, 2007

I enjoyed David quite a bit over the years. The different projects he would "enlist" me on, and the visits he would pay. It was always fun to run into him anywhere, have a laugh, and then off on our separate ways. What a fun guy, I will really miss that.

Our sympathy and prayers are sent to Mr. Stouts family. I know he was a generous, meticulous, kind man who took pride in his family. Years ago he sent a state troopers t-shirt for our son, which he wore with pride. We also got to take a tour of his boat, in which he also took great pride. We just wanted his family to know that he touched many lives and will be remembered fondly.

Cheryl (Hubbard) Brown

March 17, 2007

My sincere sympathy to David's family and friends. He was a childhood friend, and in some ways like extended family (growing up in Bayport in the same church.) Though I rarely saw him after high school, I will always remember him as gracious and good hearted, considerate and thoughtful, with a twinkle in his friendly eyes.

I have always connected one of the most wonderful memories of my childhood with him: a skating party on the bay (8th grade? 9th grade?) It was frozen like glass with a thin layer of snow. David had shoveled an enormous pie, and we all chased each other around and around on our skates, breathlessly playing "cut the pie" in the moonlight, full of joy and exuberance. Life held everything for us that night full of stars and possibilities and a huge bonfire on the shore, too. What a beautiful person David was.

Valarie Stieglbauer (Buehler)

March 15, 2007

Condolences to Wendy Stout (my most special, childhood friend), Geri, and David's Family:

Mr. Stout will be remembered for his kind heart and unique sense of wit. I spoke with him three weeks ago and soon after received a note scolding me for not addressing him as "David."

My family -Bruce and Kathy Buehler- were neighbors in Hastings, MN in the mid 70's. No matter when "Mr. Stout" saw me, he'd call me "Valery Giscard d'Estaing"- the French President from 74-81. What a great memory of David's sense of humor. Of course at age 8, it wasn't real funny but I had a good laugh with David about it in our conversation.

My father, the wanna be hippie, referred to David as "Troop." I have to laugh outloud because they were such opposites in their demeanor and approach to life. It is a case in point that David's kindness and friendship stretched beyond his professional life. My father adored David who made a real effort to stay connected long after fate took us our separate ways.

Along with his nice letter (posted 2/27), David included an invitation for a boat ride and a photo of his tugboat. He signed the letter "Love and Good Sailing to You." I know wherever you are Mr. Stout, the skies are blue and the ride is smooth.

In Gratitude for knowing David and sympathy to all who will miss him..

Dear Geri and Family,

We are deeply sadened by the news of David's death. Words can not express our sorrow for your loss.

David and I had some wonderful times growing up while attending high school and college and I will cherrish those moments forever.

It seems as we travel down the path of life and go our separate ways, that we lose our closeness of companionship but one never forgets true friendship. Time and years may have separated us but he indeed was a very close friend.

Geri, we are in Tucson for the winter and will not be able to attend the funeral but our prayers and thoughts will be with you and your family. May David rest in Peace.

To Dave's family and friends, I send my deepest sympathies. I am so saddened to hear of his death.

Dave and I went to school together at Bayport Elementary and Junior High School. He was such a special guy even back then. And when I've seen him in recent years, it was always a delight to be in his company. I have many fond memories of Dave. Although I had an open invitation to come and take a ride on his tugboat, I didn't have the opportunity to take advantage of the offer, and I regret it.

I don't even have the words to express how saddened I am. Please know that your family is in my prayers. May God's love bring you comfort and peace.

Dear Geri & Family: Dave may have been a lieutenant with the state patrol but he will always be "Captain" to us. Our life on Granite Point was blessed by the toot of the Geri Anns' horn and a water canon salute upon leaving or entering the harbor during the boating season, not to mention the air horn salute from your porch when we were underway.

Dave was an important member of the Knife River Community and a brother in Christ at Knife River Lutheran Church. We will miss his wit, wisdom and leadership and all the things big and small that he quietly did to make life better for so many. As we mourn Dave's death we will also joyfully remember him for the wonderful qualities that made him unforgettable to those that knew him.

Geri, may God's love comfort you and your family and bring you peace.

Geri and Family, KRM will never be the same without Dave's willingness to help anyone and welcome all on the GERI ANN. A unique vessel for a exceptional person. We knew Dave from the Marina and he always treated our family like he would his own. Dearest Geri, Bill, Dick, Wendy and
all your wonderful family,
When Dear Ann called and said Janeth I have some bad news I was
hoping maybe she or Dick broke a leg or something. It was a real kick in the head when she said our dear David is dead. I'm sure Jack and I aren't in any worse shock than all of you. Having just seen him at Barry's funeral and getting one of his special hugs and seeing his smiley face I couldn't believe it. Geri, one of my fondest memories will always be the night
you and David walked into the VFW
in Trinidad for Jack's and my 50th
Anniversary by surprise. What a treat it was to have you and David with us.
We want all of you to know you
are in our thoughts and prayers and

All of us that live, work and enjoy the Great Lakes are a family. We have lost a proud member of our family that will always be missed and fondly remembered. Dave's visits to the Lee A. in Two Harbors and Duluth were a highlight for myself and the crew. He always left the ship with us all smiling. Dear Geri and Family. We were so sad to hear of David passing. We have so many wonderful memories of him (starting with his rookie years) as he has always been considered one of the family.
