James Ginsberg Obituary

James P. Ginsberg, M.D., born 6-21-26 in St. Paul, MN, died April 10, 2002 at home in Naples, Florida. James was the son of Dr. William & Dorothy (Robineau) Ginsberg, nephew of Annie Ginsberg, school teacher and principal; Lily Ginsberg, postal worker; Daisy (Ginsberg) Mains, school teacher, homemaker, and mother; Cecil Ginsberg, business owner and father; and Ted Ginsberg, physician and father. Survived by beloved wife, Virginia (Baggs) Ginsberg; and daughter Leonora Ginsberg; and many cousins. Preceded in death by Aaron Lowell Ginsberg (1987); and brothers, Dr. Robert Ginsberg and Tom Ginsberg. Educated in St. Paul Public Schools, Linwood Elementary School and Central High School, and Hebrew School of St. Paul. Honor graduate of the University of Minnesota Colleges of Science, Literature and Arts (cum laude, 1946), and School of Medicine, 1949. Honor societies: Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha. Post graduate training at the University of Illinois, 1949-1950 and 1954-1957; The Minneapolis General Hospital, 1950-1951 and the Mayo Foundation, 1952-1954. Practiced and taught psychiatry in Chicago from 1957-1973. Married Virginia Baggs in Chicago May 2,1970. They adopted son, Aaron in 1972 and daughter, Leonora Ann in Bogata, Columbia in 1973. With his family he returned to Minnesota in 1973 to practice psychiatry at the Nicollet Clinic in the Department of Psychiatry, which he headed from 1974-1980. He retired in 1995. Activities and interests: Boy Scouts (He rose to the rank of Eagle Scout with Troop 53 of Temple of Aaron in St. Paul). Camping and canoeing with the St. Paul YMCA and Boy Scouts and various good friends and family throughout his life. Attached to the First Unitarian Society of Minneapolis since 1973, The Glades Country Club Community of Naples, FL from 1976, the Star Island community since 1987. Devoted to causes of human rights, justice for all, and protection of the environment. In life grateful for the deep and loyal love of family and many friends. Memorial services will be held Wednesday, April 17, 2002 at 1 PM at Enga Memorial Chapel, 5600 Excelsior Blvd, St. Louis Park, MN. In lieu of flowers memorials preferred to: Temple Aaron, St. Paul; Temple Mt. Zion, St. Paul; Boy Scouts of America; and the Unitarian-Universalists Service Community; and Hadassah Medical Organization in Israel.

Ginny, I am so sorry to hear about James passing on. I wish I could be there with you. I miss you and think about the good old days at St. Louis Park with all my old friends. Peace to you and Leonora. My prayers are with you all. Jeff
