Dear Tim and family,
About your father:
2021 subtract 1972? = 49. I´v added that several times - it seems unbelievable that it´s been that long? However that´s how many years I´v known my business development club fellow 49er, and former neighbor Mr. Pendergast (your father).
Here´s a bit of history from Neptune Street where I grow up: One day, I watched from the neighborhood dock 40 feet away as your father rigged up his C boat.
It was a sunny summer day and just short of white caps but not entirely. It was one of those days when crew of three would be wise - however a crew of one in a 20 or so foot C boat with a big sail? It would be "chancy". A chance to get very wet and swamp the boat. Yet he pushed off into the wind and jumped on. Then like a bird in a hurricane he turned the boat slightly off the wind like a bird tips its wing and shot straight across the lake, solo.
The boom, mainsheet and halyards that were banging and clanging went silent. He was up on the high-side with the sun at his back. And with the main sheet in one hand and the other on the tiller spray was shooting off the bow of the boat and was being carried away by the wind. His boatmanship was impressive.
I watched as he disappeared into the horizon and the Birchwood shoreline. And I thought I wanted to sail like that, in any weather, solo or with friends, with confidence and courage - and just get out there without much fanfare.
He was a kind person to many including a young neighbor kid, me. I feel fortunate to have been to your house and dock many times. It was just straightforward fun hanging around lakeside with my childhood friends - including your family. We are all grown up now (mostly?) and onto our own adventures. Yet I am sure we all feel lucky to have played along the lake shore and in your fathers company.
He will be missed by many.
Sincerely,
Steve Harmon and the Harmon family, Jim Harmon, Dr. James Harmon Junior and Deb Harmon from the Neptune street dock in Mahtomedi.

I am so proud to say I am Butch`s daughter. He was a great role model, a lifelong learner with a great sense of humor; he was always so fun to be around.
He was a significant contributor to the communities in which he lived. Mahtomedi, Hutchinson, Culebra and Peoria are all places he called home and he left his mark.
My siblings and I were blessed to have been able to spend his last few days with him. I had the opportunity to prepare for him what we did not realize would be his last meal, a super tuna sandwich with potato chips and a root beer float. He savored every bite.
Butch happily enjoyed the simplest things in life, a hike or a bike ride, a good educational read, the nightly news and 60 minutes. He liked squash and tennis, sailing and ice boating, fun times with family and friends, good healthy food, a firm strong back massage, and lots and lots of love.
Butch was my dad and I am so proud.

My dad was always larger then life to me. He was stronger than anyone. Smart, brave, kind, level headed, friendly, loving, and wanted only the best for all 5 of us. I am the youngest I. Our family. When I was 12 I was the only kid left in the house. I had all those years to know my dad and mom. I am so glad I had this time with them.
Dad and I have our own memories too. We went to the Paul Simon concert together. He had never been to a concert like that. It was amazing and all because I was with my dad. I have to many more things I could tell you about him. If you know him them you know he was a good man too.
I love you dad and will miss him every day.
