Philip A. Nelson, 78, of New Hartford, passed away Wednesday, October 7, 2015, at his home, with his wife by his side. He was born on March 9, 1937, in Chicago, IL, the son of Evar and Marion (Couleur) Nelson. Phil graduated from Chicago schools and received a master's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois in Urbana, IL. He proudly served his country in the US Navy as a chief engineer on the USS Ingraham. On March 15, 1969, he married Gayle Karkau at St. Paul's Church in Buffalo, NY. Phil was employed with Westinghouse in Buffalo, before moving to New Hartford and working as the director of power systems operations for the New York Power Authority in Marcy until his retirement in 2001. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Phil had many hobbies and a passion for the outdoors, especially anywhere there was water. He enjoyed taking his family camping, hiking, sailing, skiing and fishing. Phil enjoyed model trains and playing with Legos with his grandson, Ethan. Surviving are his wife, Gayle, New Hartford; sons and daughters-in-law, Mark (Melissa) Nelson, Remsen, and David (Colleen) Nelson, Skaneateles; grandchildren, Ethan, Gavin and Connor; sister-in-law, Susan (Richard) Donnelly, MI, and Cheryl Bunn. He was predeceased by a brother, Thomas Nelson. Relatives and friends are invited to attend memorial services on Thursday at 11 a.m. from Dimbleby, Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral Home, 13 Oxford Rd., New Hartford. Remembrances in Phil's name may be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. I have for many years been gone from Tennyson circle. I was good friends with your son Mark and have thought of you all often. I am sorry for the passing of Mr Nelson. I have fond memories of him and all the wonderful adventures that we went on whether it be in the back yard on the zip line or the canoe on the water..

Dearest Gayle and Family: So very sorry to hear of Phil's passing. He was truly a kind and gentle man to all who had the pleasure of making his acquaintance.
