MERCEDES, TX. -
Judith Diana Solis VanBerg, 59, passed away December 10, 2013 at Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco among her family.
She was born March 28, 1954 to Silverio Solis and Yolanda Leal Solis. She graduated from Mercedes High School. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Chemistry at the University of Texas. Later, she studied Geological Sciences at the University of Texas Pan-American and received a Masters Degree in Library Sciences from Sam Houston State University. She married Mark VanBerg in Michigan in 1974. They lived in Austin together while they studied at UT before moving back to Mercedes to start a family.
Judy lived a very eventful life. Before settling down as an educator in Mercedes, she was an active geologist. She climbed several mountains in Mexico and studied the Colima Volcano Complex. Her passion for Earth Science eventually lead her to teach 8th grade science at Mercedes Jr. High. She deeply enjoyed her time as a teacher, only deciding to move out of the classroom to reach more students as a librarian. Still, she never stopped teaching. She engaged many students on her campuses, and she integrated emerging technologies into the classroom and library. As a campus technology coordinator, she did more than just troubleshoot computer issues. She was an advocate for technological advancement and the positive changes it could bring to the classroom.
Judy was an avid reader and could rarely be found without a book in her hand. She was a longtime choir member at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, oftentimes leading the choir with her guitar. She was caring, a mentor, and above all else, she was generous with her time and spirit.
She will be greatly missed by her survivors, Husband Mark VanBerg and son Alexander Van Berg of Mercedes, and daughter Sydney VanBerg of Austin; her brothers Ruben Solis, Michael Solis, and James Solis of Austin, and David Solis of Flint, Michigan.
A visitation will be held at Garcia and Treviño Funeral Home in Mercedes from 4 pm - 7 pm on Thursday, December 12, 2013. Following the visitation a rosary will be held at 7 pm. A Funeral Mass will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Mercedes at 10 am on Friday, December 13, 2013, interment will follow at Ebony Grove Cemetery also in Mercedes.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home of Mercedes.

I think of Judy often and still have difficulty believing she is no longer with us. I loved her like a sister and it still grieves me that her life was cut so short. She was an incredibly smart and strong woman who had a tremendous capacity to love. I would love to be able to give her a big hug and have a long visit.

Dear Mark and family: We were so sorry to hear that you lost Judy. The Guajardo family has a very special relationship with the VanBerg family. One or another Guajardo family member has lived next door to Mark and Judy for many years. Pablo and I still have the wedding gift that they gave us when we married in 1976, a salt shaker and a pepper mill, both made of a beautiful wood. We take them out and use them only on Thanksgiving Day. We had our first child just about the same time. We live in Minnesota and when we visited my in-laws she would bring Alexander to play with our son Pablo. My husband has many memories of the VanBerg family that he has shared with me. Pablo remembers attending school with both Mark and Judy. The Guajardo family also experienced the death of two of Pablo's siblings this year. Pablo is thankful that he got a chance to visit with Mark and Judy when they supported the Guajardo family last April. We were down there for Silvestre's funeral. We weren't able to go when we also lost Mateo just over a month ago. I can still hear Judy's voice calling out to my mother-in-law, so respectfully, when she stopped by to visit, Sra. Sydney, Alexander and Mark, I just don't have the words to describe how saddened I am to learn of your loss. There are not enough words to describe just what a wonderful person she was. She was an integral part of a group that I had the privilege to watch as they studied and worked together, and came together as a close family of friends. She was always there with a beautiful smile, ready to help. She was so intelligent, witty, with a wonderful sense of humor, and a kind heart. The privilege to know and work with someone like Judy doesn't happen often. She will be greatly missed, and happily remembered.

The time we had with Judy was far too short and I wish we had more opportunities to tell her how precious and delightful was her companionship. It was a privilege to be her friend and to have worked the field (geology) with her. We will all miss the care and warmth of her fellowship.
